The Lead Police Department recently took a report of a attempt to scam one of our citizens. A female received a call who claimed to be Wal-Mart advising that she had purchased a Playstation. She told them that she did not, and they connected her to another party.

While on the phone with a person identifying as an Agent David Freeman with the Inspector General's Office (Office of Social Security), the agent provided a photo of his badge, seen below. This badge has been used in many scams through out the nation. "Agent Freeman" advised the victim that her social security number had been used to open multiple accounts associated with cartels.

"Agent Freeman" told the victim that she would need to empty her bank and trust accounts into another secure location to prevent her from losing her money. After a while, the victim believed that she was being scammed and hung up before providing account information.

Later that day, a man claiming to be from the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office (it was not), called and continued to harass and threaten the victim until she sends money. The scammer hung up once confronted by the investigating Lead Police Officer.

⚠️This was NOT a member of the Sheriff's Office calling. This was a scammer attempting to fake his identity and using websites that appear the phone numbers are legitimate, in order to scare and threaten you into providing information. They will make things seem urgent and serious in order to coerce you into giving them your money.

If you think you are being targeted as a victim of a scam:
✅Hang up
✅Do not provide any information
✅Contact your bank through a local number and let them know the attempt to scam
✅Block the phone number that they are calling from
✅Report the fraud to the Police Department

This is may be a real badge, but this exact photo has been circulated trying to legitimize the scammers attempt to seem official.

🐻 Visiting the Lead Area?

The South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks Department is asking for your help in keeping both people and black bears safe.

Over the past couple of weeks, an active black bear has repeatedly been accessing garbage in the subdivision near Terry Peak Ski Area. According to GFP, unsecured trash is encouraging the bear to return, creating an ongoing safety concern for both people and wildlife.

Fire restrictions will begin tomorrow July 27th! Do your part in preventing wild fires. 🌲🔥

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions Take Effect Monday, July 27

The Lead Volunteer Fire Department is asking all residents and visitors to be aware that Stage 2 fire restrictions will go into effect across the Black Hills National Forest on Monday, July 27th. This action is being taken due to persistent severe fire weather and extended drought conditions affecting our area.

Under Stage 2 restrictions, the following are prohibited:
- Open fires, including campfires, charcoal barbecues, grills, and stoves, unless the device is fueled by liquid or gas and used in a cleared area within three feet of the device.
- Smoking outdoors, except within enclosed vehicles or buildings.
- Welding or use of open flame torches, including acetylene torches.
- Use or possession of explosives.
- Off road travel by motorized vehicles outside of established roads and trails.

The following remain permitted:
- Stoves, grills, and lanterns fueled by propane or other LPG that meet manufacturer safety specifications.
- Motor vehicle travel on designated Forest Service roads and trails.
- Hiking, biking, and walking.

These restrictions exist to protect the safety of our community and the natural resources we all depend on. Violations can result in fines up to $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, along with possible jail time.

Before heading into the forest, please secure chains, check tire pressure, and confirm your brakes are in good working order.

If you see a fire, report it immediately by calling 911.
