Thursday, June 4, 2026. Artifact 1.

Throwback Thursday has arrived for 2026! Like last summer and many summers before, we will be highlighting various artifacts from the Temple Israel Museum collection. This summer, we will focus loosely on housewares (items used at home) and the places where people got them. These will mostly include items like liquor jugs, souvenir ceramics, and other containers.

For this week, we are covering a souvenir dish, one of many we will cover this summer. This one is referred to as an ice cream dish. These are unique notable for the single wide handle on the side. Similar styles of this dish were used by the Harvey Houses and on the Santa Fe Railway dining cars. Jennie (J. S.) Sandusky sold this and other souvenir china in her furniture and second hand business in the early 1900s. All of these souvenirs featured a prominent place of Leadville, in this case, the Lake County Court House.

The Temple Israel Museum historic structure has a new stained glass rose window! Historically, the synagogue had stained glass in all of its windows, including both of the gable end circle windows. We have restored stained glass to the front window that was based on a similar modern design to the one restored at the other end of the building, originally designed by Gretchen Koplin. This new window was fabricated by the Scottish Stained Glass Company of Centennial, Colorado. The Temple Israel Museum also want to thank the Intermountain Jewish News for featuring this new stained glass in their recent issue of Friday, May 29, 2026!

Chag Purim Sameach!

Starting tonight through tomorrow night, March 2-3, 2026. What better way to celebrate Purim than with hamantaschen! (like shown here)

For twenty years, 1879 to 1898 (as we have found so far), the Jews in Leadville celebrated Purim with annual Purim balls. They were THE Jewish event of the year where as many as hundreds of people attended most years, including non Jews. The Temple Israel Museum has done extensive research compiling information about Purim and the Purim Balls, which is available on our website.
