La Plata Wildfire Update | Friday, Sept. 5, 2025

Location: Leadville Ranger District within the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness, 4 miles west of Twin Lakes in Chaffee and Lake Counties

Start Date: Aug. 17, 2025, at 5:46 p.m.

Size: 133 acres

Containment: 44%

Cause: Human-caused, abandoned campfire.

Vegetation: Oak brush, ponderosa pine, and Douglas fir.
Resources: 12 personnel including one Type 3 helicopter, one Type 3 engine, a drone, and other personnel and resources as needed.

Highlights: Although smoke is visible, the fire has not grown, remaining at 133 acres and 44% containment.

Firefighters continue to suppress the fire. They have improved containment features away from the fire’s edge and have kept the fire within natural boundaries, such as tree line and scree fields.

Firefighters are engaging as conditions allow, given the drier conditions and reduced risk of slips and falls. Specifically, firefighters are now working to improve containment features around Lake Creek and the La Plata trail to help secure the north, south, and west sides of the fire. Natural boundaries surround the eastern side of the fire.

Weather: The forecast for the upcoming days includes above-average temperatures and thunderstorms, with the potential for gusty and erratic winds over the wildfire area.

Closure: A closure order is still in effect around the La Plata Wildfire to protect public health and safety. Visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/r02/psicc/alerts/modified-la-plata-wildfire-area-and-trail-closure to view the order and map.

Safety: The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the highest priority. Drones and firefighting aircraft are a dangerous mix and could lead to accidents or slow down wildfire operations. If you fly, we can’t.

This order affects the Leadville Ranger District. The purpose of this Order is to protect public safety. Please see the document below for more information and associated maps.

La Plata Fire Closure Area Reduced
PUEBLO, Colo., Aug. 29, 2025 – Today, forest officials reduced the size of the closure in place on National Forest System lands near the La Plata Fire in Lake and Chaffee counties.
The Leadville Ranger District issued the closure order Aug. 27, 2025, for firefighter and public safety, given the active La Plata Fire and fire suppression activity in the area. With recent and forecasted moisture and decreased fire activity, forest officials are rescinding Forest Order #02-12-01-25-17 and replacing it with Forest Order #02-12-01-25-18.
With the new order, National Forest System Road (NFSR) 391 and the southern approach to La Plata Peak from NFSR 390A/North Fork Clear Creek have reopened. La Plata Peak Trail #1474 and La Plata (North) Trailhead and Parking Lot will remain closed until Jan. 1, 2025, or until rescinded.
The 133-acre La Plata Fire started on Aug. 17, 2025, by an abandoned campfire and is 44% contained. Over 40 firefighters and overhead continue to actively suppress the fire using ground and aerial resources, including a Type 2 crew, two engines, drones and helicopters.
Firefighters are assessing conditions and risks multiple times a day to identify safe and appropriate suppression actions near or away from the active fire and containing it to natural boundaries, such as tree line and scree fields, and containment lines. Interior pockets of heat will linger until a substantial snowpack blankets the area. Warmer, drier weather may make smoke visible.
For updated information on the La Plata Fire, visit https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/copsf-la-plata.

Why Lake County is not entering fire restrictions at this time..

We know many in our community are feeling worried about fire danger. Please know that these decisions are not made lightly. Fire restrictions are based on science and measurable conditions, not emotion, and we want to share openly with you why restrictions are not in place right now.

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS), which manages most of the land in and around Lake County, has reviewed current fire conditions and determined we do not currently meet the thresholds for fire restrictions. This assessment is supported by Sheriff Speckman, Fire Chief Dailey, and our partners at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) respects their expertise and is committed to moving forward with one unified approach.

Here’s what the data shows:
- Fire danger is expected to decrease to Moderate in the Salida District and Low in the Leadville District over the next week, if forecasted conditions hold true.
- The La Plata Fire grew slowly and predictably, consistent with High fire danger. If conditions were more severe, growth would have been much faster and more intense.
- Restriction criteria have not been met. While some fuels are dry, much of the vegetation still holds moisture, and thresholds like “Very High” fire danger have not been reached.
- Restrictions must be consistent. A county-only restriction would not apply to USFS or BLM lands, which make up most of Lake County, it would only place restrictions on county owned land and private landowners. Different rules across jurisdictions would cause confusion for residents, visitors, dispatch, and law enforcement.

For now, fire danger signs will remain at High. Our fire experts are monitoring conditions every day, and if things change, restrictions will be implemented quickly and in coordination with USFS and BLM.

Know that we are continuing to exercise extreme care and caution, and we ask that you please continue to do your part to keep Lake County safe. We appreciate your concern, and we hear you. We hope this explanation clears things up a bit. As always, if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to reach out. We are always happy to talk through these issues.

Please refer to this Special Meeting from Friday August 22 with the BOCC, Sheriff Speckman and Fire Chief Dailey for a better understanding of how the fire restriction process works.

La Plata Fire Update
Monday, Aug. 25, 2025 – 8 a.m.
Colorado Incident Management Team
Phil Daniels, Incident Commander

Size: 133 acres | Containment: 20% | Total Personnel: 106
Location: Pike-San Isabel National Forests, 4 miles west of Twin Lakes in Chaffee and Lake counties
Reported: Aug. 17, 2025, at 5:46 p.m. | Cause: Human-caused

Special Notes: The La Plata Fire was caused by an abandoned campfire. Email any potential information about the cause of the fire to [email protected] with "La Plata Fire Information" in the subject line. Please follow any fire restrictions when recreating in the high country. It takes more than just a bit of water to put out a campfire fully. If your campfire is too hot to touch, it is too hot to leave. Learn more at smokeybear.com/campfire-safety.

ATTENTION HUNTERS: Your hunting tag may take you to an area that is closed for firefighter and public safety. While gates in these areas may have been left open to aid in firefighting efforts, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is asking the public to respect the closures in place for your safety and the safety of fire crews on the ground. For additional information on alternative access locations, please visit the Colorado Hunting Atlas online or contact your local CPW office.

Current Situation: The area of the fire received a half inch of rain last night, resulting in very slippery and muddy conditions that are too hazardous for firefighters to work in. The team is looking at downsizing the number of resources based on very minimal fire behavior and the decreased threat to private property, communities, infrastructure, watersheds and other critical assets. The west flank is plumbed with a wet line of hoses, sprinklers and pumps. The north and east perimeter is up against rocky scree, those accumulations of loose, coarse-grained rock fragments and debris found on steep slopes. The fire has not moved south due to a combination of suppression efforts, weather and lack of combustible materials available. Fire managers will continue to assess the situation and make risk-based decisions keeping responder and public safety as the top priority. Fire crews will be flying an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), a drone, today to gather more data regarding fire conditions.

Weather: The high today is 61 degrees with scattered thunderstorms and showers developing in the afternoon. Relative humidity will be between 50% to 55%. Light westerly winds at 5 to 10 mph with gusty and erratic winds expected later today.

Fire Behavior: Fire activity is very minimal due to rainfall and higher humidity. Almost an inch of rain has fallen over the last 72 hours. There is some smoldering in the pine duff and in large stumps and logs.

Closures: A closure order is still in effect on the Pike-San Isabel National Forests around the La Plata Fire to protect public health and safety. For the full closure order and map, visit www.fs.usda.gov/r02/psicc/alerts/la-plata-wildfire-area-road-and-trails-closure. The Dexter Point and Sunnyside day use areas are currently unavailable due to fire camp. A temporary flight restriction (TFR) is in effect in the airspace above the fire. Wildfires are always a no-fly zone for unauthorized aircraft, including drones. If you fly, we can’t. For more information, visit knowbeforeyoufly.org.

Fire Restrictions: Do not get complacent—fire danger is still MODERATE to HIGH across the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands. Although fire restrictions are not in place on the forests and grasslands, Chaffee County, including the towns of Buena Vista and Poncha Springs, is under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions.

Si usted vuela, nosotros no podemos.

Size: 90 acres | Containment: 0% | Total Personnel: 128
Location: Pike-San Isabel National Forests, 4 miles west of Twin Lakes in Chaffee and Lake Counties
Reported: Aug. 17, 2025, at 5:46 p.m. | Cause: Human-caused

Special Notes: The fire investigator has determined that the La Plata Fire was caused by an abandoned campfire. Anyone with information that could help in the investigation is asked to contact law enforcement. Please exercise extreme caution when recreating in the high country and follow any fire restrictions. Learn more about campfire safety at https://smokeybear.com/campfire-safety.

ATTENTION HUNTERS: Your hunt may take you to an area that is closed for firefighter and public safety.

Current Situation: Fire behavior picked up in several areas yesterday afternoon due to weather and shifting winds. A spot fire outside the fireline on the south side was contained by crews. Areas of single and group tree torching were also reported on the north side. Ground personnel were assisted by a Type 1 helicopter dropping water on difficult-to-reach hot spots. A Type 3 helicopter delivered additional pumps and hoses to firefighters working on the flanks, and crews are making significant progress in constructing and reinforcing firelines, as well as establishing hoselines in those areas. Firefighters continue to scout and identify opportunities to utilize the terrain to their advantage, especially scree fields and the avalanche chute on the northeast side. The focus today will be on strengthening the line along the trail on the west and extending indirect lines in areas where snags and other hazards prevent safe operations directly on the fire’s edge. They are also exploring opportunities for utilizing small burnout operations to tie together previously burned areas.

Weather: Mostly cloudy and cooler, with scattered thunderstorms and gusty, erratic winds possible. Expect rainfall amounts around a tenth of an inch. A cold front is expected to pass through the region during the afternoon, bringing a chance for showers and thunderstorms from mid-afternoon into the evening.

Fire Behavior: Mostly smoldering and creeping with some spotting and torching when winds align with the terrain. Active burning in areas of spruce and lodgepole pine, especially in areas with dead and down trees. Relative humidity will be in the 30-40 percent range, decreasing fire behavior.

Evacuations: Currently, NO evacuations have been ordered. Sign up for Chaffee County emergency alerts at https://chaffeecounty.org/departments/sheriff/communications/everbridge.php. Sign up for Lake County emergency alerts at https://member.everbridge.net/892807736726383/login.

Closures: The Forest Service is closing National Forest System lands and trails around the wildfire. A detailed closure order and map will be available soon. The purpose of this order is to protect the public’s health and safety during firefighting operations. Wildfires are a no-fly zone for unauthorized aircraft, including drones. If you fly, we can’t. For more information, visit http://knowbeforeyoufly.org.

Fire Restrictions: Fire danger is mostly HIGH across the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands. Although fire restrictions are not in place on the forests and grasslands, Chaffee County is under Stage 1 fire restrictions. Restrictions apply to all of unincorporated Chaffee County, as well as within the municipal boundaries of the Town of Buena Vista and the Town of Poncha Springs.

Smoke: Smoke may be visible to communities in Twin Lakes, Leadville, Granite and Buena Vista, as well as along Highways 24 and 82.

Si usted vuela, nosotros no podemos.
