3rd AD Desert Storm Album

3rd AD Desert Storm Album I am LTC Joel Buck, US Army Retired.

I deployed to Saudi Arabia as part of the Division Tactical Command Post (DTAC) shortly after Thanksgiving 1990 as part of the division advanced party for Desert Shield.

Notified 9 November 1990 that we were going to deploy to Southwest Asia, I underwent a total of three “preparations for overseas movements” (POMs) before finally getting everything “right.” Even then, it was March 1991 before my pay was straight. This poor shot was taken in a gym during the third and final POL sometime the end of November.

The Division Tactical Command Post (DTAC) loaded their equipment and vehicles early for transport. The plan was to move the majority of the DTAC equipment and personnel by C-5 cargo plane. The fly date changed daily from the week before Thanksgiving until the day we actually flew out of Rhein-Main Airbase.

Final line-up and inspection prior to departing for the airport on 14 December. HQ7M was the Assistant Division Commander for Maneuver (ADC-M), BG Blackwell, sleeper van and office and the only 2 ½ ton truck we took.

Equipment all packed and checked, we had one last day off to spend with our families before departing.

Although it was already late November, we still had leaves on the trees in the Bad Nauheim park across the street from our housing area. A favorite spot for walks on Sunday afternoons, we had spent many an hour within this beautiful park.

I carried copies of these pictures of me with my wife, Diane, and our kids with me throughout most of my time in SWA, laminated to the inside of one of my journals.

We departed Drake Kaserne for the airport at 2100 on December 14th. Our flight was delayed until early the next morning. We arrived at Daharan airport at dust the 15th. After in-processing, we drove through the night north to the Dew Drop Inn, a tent city created outside the port of Al Jabbail.
US casualties were expected to be high. Each soldier in the DTAC had been issued a body bag before leaving Germany and was ordered to carry it with them everywhere.

We arrived at the Dew Drop Inn at 0200, erected our GP medium tents, then crashed. We had been up and going for over 30 hours. We awoke to find ourselves surrounded by nearly 7,000 soldiers in a camp designed to accommodate 5,000. Cots were set up everywhere, including on the hard stand area where all meals were served.

This shot from the berm in front of the 3rd Armored Division Forward Command Post (3AD FWD CP) we established looks back toward the mess area. The PX was located in the four GP large tents. Open from 1000 until 2100, the line started to form right after breakfast. 15 soldiers were let into the PX at a time for a 5-minute shopping period, then cleared out to let in another 15. Average waiting time in line while we were there was 2 hours 45 minutes.

This shows our 3AD FWD CP at 1000 hours on 16 December, our first full day at the Dew Drop Inn. The camouflage nets provided more shade than camouflage for our M577 tracked CP, HQ7M, three GP medium tents, and two HUMVEs, two M880 pickup trucks, and one Mobile Radio Phone (MRT) equipped non-tactical vehicle (NTV).
