Everything visible in this photograph of Kansas State Penitentiary is gone. The large two-story buildings at the end of the street were once a part of the thriving Kansas Manufacturing Company, where wagons were produced using inmate labor. By 1883, the manufacturing operation occupied a large portion of the Kansas State Penitentiary grounds, making prison industry a major part of the institution’s early landscape.
