At our National Cemeteries, we walk among heroes, many of whom earned the Purple Heart through their valor in combat. Their stories, their courage, and their legacy live on in these grounds, reminding us of the true cost of freedom.

Korean War Veterans Armistice Day is observed each year on July 27 to honor those who served in the Korean War and to commemorate the ceasefire that ended active hostilities in 1953.

The Korean War began June 25, 1950, when North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel into South Korea. The ensuing conflict would last three years and involve more than 20 countries. The war, often called "The Forgotten War," was one of the first major conflicts of the Cold War. U.S. and allied forces, including troops from the United Kingdom, France, Australia, and other nations, intervened to support South Korea against Chinese and North Korean forces. The war caused nearly five million military and civilian casualties, with more than 32,000 Americans killed and nearly 93,000 wounded. To date, over 7,400 American servicemembers are still unaccounted for as either missing in action or prisoners of war.

The Korean Armistice Agreement was signed on July 27, 1953, at Panmunjom establishing a ceasefire along the 38th parallel. It created the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that still separates North and South Korea. National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day was codified in 1995 to further honor the Veterans who served during this conflict.

Korean War Veterans Armistice Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 20th century, honoring the bravery of those who fought and the fragile peace that continues to endure. On this day, Americans are encouraged to reflect on the service of Korean War Veterans, learn their stories, and remember "The Forgotten War". This day also serves to highlight the enduring alliance between the United States and South Korea and the ongoing commitment to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

Leavenworth National Cemetery is honored to be the final resting place of 6,054 Korean War Veterans. Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. We invite you to come visit them and their beloved family members who sustained the Homefront while these brave Americans answered the Nation's call.

Beginning August 2026 our floral pickup schedule will change. Floral items will now be removed on Thursdays during the first and third weeks of each month.

This update is intended to better support families, especially those who travel from out of town and often visit on weekends. By shifting the pickup day to Thursday, items placed on loved ones’ gravesites will remain in place longer, rather than being removed after only a day or two.

During each pickup, we will remove:

• Spent or damaged flowers
• Unsightly or damaged items
• Items prohibited by the cemetery’s Floral Policy

Kindly remember artificial flowers are only permitted from October 1 to April 1.

From June 15 through June 19, minor repairs will be conducted to install a new concrete pad at the entrance of Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. During this time, the kiosk will not be accessible.
