What Does It Mean to Be American? Our next virtual program with Oregon Humanities is TONIGHT at 6 PM

This conversation will explore when and how we define ourselves as “American.” Does knowing the Constitution make us American? Does living on land controlled by the United States of America make us American? Through conversation, we will share what “American” means to us individually and within the communities we belong to. We will also look at what perspectives shaped our understanding of American identity and who is included in “We the People.”

Celebrating Cashmere Library's new Reimagined Space in the Riverside Center with a Grand Opening on Saturday, 8/8, 10-2pm! Featuring live music, door prizes, local authors, crafts, and more.

The new library features expanded collections and seating, a redesigned children’s area focused on play and early literacy, dedicated tween and teen spaces, meeting and study rooms, improved accessibility, and flexible gathering areas for community use.

NCW Libraries is excited to welcome the community into the new Cashmere Public Library for a Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature remarks by public officials, local authors, crafts for teens and kids, live music, door prizes, and more. Thanks to Lexy from the Chelan-Douglas Hralth District for stopping by to monitor the air quality in the library and lend us a commercial quality air filter! We’re grateful to be partnering to provide masks and clean air for the whole community to breathe easy despite the smoke outside.

Funding provided through a partnership between the EPA and WA Department of Natural Resources to build smoke resiliency in our region.

We have masks - one per household member - and will be open and running programs all week. Come by for a place to read, work, puzzle, or have a chat!

😷 The air quality across much of NCW today is unhealthy, and in some areas hazardous, due to the many wildfires burning in the region.

Please remember that all our libraries in NCW have a supply of N95 particulate masks FREE for the taking. Please stop by a library and pick one up as needed.

If you need to escape the smoke or if you have been evacuated, please stop by one of our air-conditioned libraries during open hours and stay as long as you need. You can use the free public computers, connect to the WiFi or just sit and read or catch up with friends.

What are you reading this Wednesday, Leavenworth?

I've got both a fiction and nonfiction read going:
- Mrs. Shim is a Killer by Kang Jiyoung, a dark comedy about a middle-aged Korean mother who puts her butchering skills to use as an assassin to support her family. Each chapter is from a different person's point of view; curious to see whether/how it will cohere.
- Palaces for the People: How Social Infrastructure Can Help Fight Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life by Eric Klinenberg. EVERYONE who cares about civic life should READ THIS BOOK! Special place in my heart for his understanding of how libraries support civic life.

What Does Freedom Depend on? with Oregon Humanities

The United States is often referred to as “the land of the free.” Our freedoms are rooted in the Bill of Rights and later amendments to the Constitution. What do these freedoms depend on? How does my freedom intersect with the freedoms of others? This conversation will take us through an exploration of these questions and more as we consider our freedoms and if and when they might be changed.

This is an interactive program, please come prepared to participate.
