Today, members of the Leawood Police Department were proud to participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Kansas, helping carry the "Flame of Hope" alongside law enforcement partners from across the metro.

The Torch Run raises awareness and support for Special Olympics Kansas athletes while promoting inclusion, acceptance, and opportunity for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

We're honored to support these incredible athletes and the positive impact Special Olympics has throughout our communities.

A huge congratulations to Officer teDuits as he graduated with the 147th class of the Johnson County Regional Police Academy last night. Today he hit the ground running and you may see him out and about with several different training officers throughout the next 16 weeks of field training. Congratulations!

Auto burglaries are down compared to recent years, but they're still happening. The biggest issue... UNLOCKED VEHICLES. In 71% of the reported incidents so far this year the vehicle was left unlocked, often times with the keys or valuables in plain sight.

Yes, even in Leawood. Even in broad daylight. Even in your own garage or driveway. Even when you're "just running inside for a little bit."

We've had cases in driveways, at gyms, at parks or trailheads, at shopping malls, at country clubs, at office buildings... the list goes on and on. Crime can happen anytime and anywhere, so please take these easy steps to help.

This Memorial Day, several of our officers completed the Murph Challenge to honor Lt. Michael Murphy, U.S. Navy SEAL, and all veterans and service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
