This week is School Bus Safety Week, and across WCESC our drivers are doing what they do every single day: getting our students where they need to be, safely.

It takes real attention to care for the students we serve on the road. Different needs, different routes, early mornings, and a steady calm that keeps every ride predictable and safe. Our transportation teams carry all of that, mile after mile.

To every driver and aide on our buses: thank you. You are often the first face a student sees in the morning and the last one at the end of the day, and that matters more than most people realize.

Stay alert out there, and watch for our buses.

Why WCESC? Meet Emilia C.

In her first year with WCESC’s SCC program, Emilia is building on her background in Applied Behavior Analysis and her passion for working with individuals with disabilities. “I wanted to gain experience in a school setting where I could support students not only with behavior but also with communication, independence, and their overall success,” she explains.

SCC stood out for its focus on individualized support and helping students reach their potential. Since joining, she has found mentors in her classroom team, behavior team, and administration. “Being able to learn from one another and share different perspectives has helped me feel welcomed and become more confident in my role.”

What she has enjoyed most is building relationships with her students—getting to know them, learning what works best for each one, and finding ways to support their needs. “It is very rewarding to watch the students grow!”

She has also appreciated the flexibility of the learning environment and her team’s willingness to adjust strategies and supports. “I really appreciate how everyone brings different perspectives and works together to find what works best for each student.”

As she continues her studies in Applied Behavior Analysis, she looks forward to connecting what she learns with her daily work. Her goals reflect the same curiosity and commitment that brought her to WCESC: “I’m looking forward to continuing to build my skills, learn from my team, and become better at supporting each student’s needs.”

How do we make strong practice even stronger?
Our October Champions for Children show us through their everyday work.

These honorees demonstrate our October Champion for Children attribute, Elevates Practice, by continually looking for ways to strengthen their work while helping those around them grow. They seek new learning, welcome feedback, and ask thoughtful questions. They put that learning into action and share their expertise, resources, and strategies to help colleagues better support those we serve.

Their contributions include creating ongoing training and feedback for behavior interventionists, organizing student plans and accommodations so teaching teams can easily access them, and designing emotion cards around students’ interests to make learning more meaningful. They also partner across departments to help students role-play workplace communication and find creative ways to make Family Engagement Nights more welcoming.

Through everyday guidance and thoughtful improvements, these Champions strengthen their teams and the services we provide to students, families, and districts.

Please join us in celebrating our October Champions for Children and thanking them for helping us learn, grow, and improve together.

Another workforce development opportunity is underway through the Warren County Business Advisory Council.

This week we launched our Fall Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification Cohort for Employer Partners, bringing together 12 participants from five Warren County employers.

Over the next four weeks, the group meets for two hours each week to build practical skills in process improvement, problem-solving, and continuous improvement, the kind of tools participants can take straight back to their workplaces on Monday.

This cohort reflects a core part of the WCBAC mission. We are preparing the workforce of the future, and we are also strengthening the people already contributing to Warren County every day.

And we are just getting started. A second employer cohort begins in March.

We are grateful to our participating employers for investing their employees' time in professional growth, and for partnering with us as we build a stronger, more connected workforce across Warren County.

Western Woof is three years old this fall, and our student interns are back in the kitchen with pumpkin on the menu.

Dressed in their business uniforms, students run every step themselves. They bake the treats, package them, and sell the finished batches. Each round is a chance to build independence, practice communication, and sharpen real job skills, then stand back and see a job done well.

New this year: weekly dog treat subscriptions. Keep your pup stocked while supporting the students who make every batch.

Three years in, we're grateful for a community that keeps showing up for our students and their work. Every purchase turns into real learning and real growth.

Design. Test. Learn. Improve. Our 8th graders at the John Lazares Career Exploration Center are running the full design thinking process, and the tool is Mario Maker.

Building a great game level takes more than imagination. Students have to think about the person who will play it, anticipate where they'll get stuck, test their ideas, gather feedback, and keep improving.

Along the way they're practicing skills that reach well past gaming: creativity, problem-solving, empathy, persistence, and learning through iteration.

One of the lessons we care about most? Your first design doesn't have to be your best design. Test it. Learn from it. Make it better.

At the JLCEC, we want students to see themselves as designers and creators, not just users of technology. Sometimes career-ready skills look a lot like play.

On Friday, October 2nd, our Sinclair Pre-professional Academy students walked the halls of a working hospital and saw what their futures could look like.

They toured Premier Health Atrium Medical Center of Middletown, where Michelle Fraley, Director of Nursing, and Jennifer from Human Resources welcomed them in and introduced them to staff across Nutrition, Environmental Services, Patient Access and Services, and more.

Students got to ask real questions of real professionals and picture themselves in those roles. That kind of day sticks with you.

Western Row Learning Center's 9th graders have turned Marketing, Leadership, and Business lessons into two real businesses: Phoenix Fire Pizza and Phoenix Fire Bakery.

This isn't a worksheet version of the working world. Students have learned business roles and responsibilities, workplace safety, ServSafe practices, teamwork, leadership, and how to understand a customer.

And they aren't just learning about customers. They're listening to them. Samples of Phoenix Fire pizza and bakery cookies were shared with Western Row staff and to visiting government and local leaders. Students collect feedback, weigh what they hear, and make changes to sharpen the product.

Every sample is one more opportunity at communication, customer service, problem-solving, and the slow work of turning an idea into a business that opens its doors.

Phoenix Fire Pizza and Phoenix Fire Bakery are now officially open for sales for this school year.

This is what happens when a team builds real experiences around the students we serve.

Host. Mentor. Hire. — Turning Exposure into Employment.

What an incredible turnout for our Warren County Business Advisory Council Q1
meeting!

We were thrilled to welcome so many of our education and industry partners for a
morning focused on one important question: How do we turn career exposure into real
opportunities for students and students into entry-level employees for our business
partners?

The conversation reinforced that meaningful work-based learning doesn't happen by
accident. It takes employers willing to host, professionals willing to mentor, and
education and industry partners working together to create experiences that can
ultimately lead to employment.

We shared ideas, explored best practices for internships and work experiences, and
continued the important work of strengthening the connections between our classrooms
and our workplaces.

Most encouraging was the energy in the room. The outstanding turnout was a powerful
reminder that Warren County has employers and educators who are committed to
building opportunities for students and building our future workforce at the same time.
Work-Based Learning IS Workforce Development.

Thank you to every business and education partner who showed up, shared your
perspective, and continues to invest in this work. This is exactly what the WCBAC was
created to do.
