🚙 Mallory’s Road to Success

Balancing the responsibilities of raising two children, while building a career, was never easy, and reliable transportation was one of the biggest obstacles standing in Mallory’s way.

Without a dependable car, getting to work on time or being available for her children’s school and activities was a constant struggle. That all changed when Mallory was introduced to the Cars to Work Program. This initiative provides vehicles to individuals who need reliable transportation to commute to work or training opportunities.

As a Peer Recovery Specialist, Mallory dedicates her life to supporting others who are working through recovery. The vehicle she received through the Russell County Cars to Work Program through the Southwest Virginia Workforce Development Board. Funded by a Wellsprings Foundation IMPACT grant, the car has given her the stability and independence she needed—not just for her career, but for her family’s future.

For Mallory, the impact of the program went far beyond convenience—it arrived at a moment when she needed it most.

As she shared: “This program helped me be able to get back and forth to work, community service, and do everything I need to do for my lease on a new life. This couldn’t have come at a better time. I had almost 2 years clean and a good job, that I still have, and my car was messed up, not even wanting to drive. I also am repairing my credit, and there was no other way I could have gotten a car.”

By removing the barrier of unreliable transportation, the Cars to Work Program gave Mallory the tools to succeed—both as a professional and as a mother. Mallory’s story is a reminder that sometimes, a set of car keys represents much more than just a vehicle. For her, it represents opportunity, independence, and hope.

Every new nurse entering the workforce helps strengthen healthcare services in Southwest Virginia and ensures that our communities continue to have access to compassionate, skilled care close to home.

We want to recognize another group of dedicated graduates from the Buchanan County Career, Technology & Higher Learning Center's LPN program. SWVA Works was proud to support these students as they worked toward their goals and prepared for careers in healthcare.

Pictured are Brianna, Emily, Tiffanie, and Ashleigh, who successfully completed the program and are now beginning the next chapter of their nursing journeys. Their hard work, determination, and commitment to helping others will make a positive impact in the communities they serve.

Congratulations! We are so proud of you!

As graduation season continues across our area’s career and training centers, we are proud to celebrate students who are preparing to step into careers that make a real difference in our communities. Healthcare workers play an especially important role in rural Southwest Virginia, where the need for skilled and compassionate nurses continues to grow.

Programs like the Licensed Practical Nursing program at the Lee County Career and Technical Center are helping prepare dedicated individuals for meaningful careers while strengthening the future of healthcare in our region.

Through WIOA funding, SWVA Works supported five of these Lee County Career and Technical Center LPN graduates with tuition, travel expenses, uniforms, and supplies as they completed their nursing training, helping them achieve their career goals.

These students included: Caleb, who was named Valedictorian and also received the Florence Nightingale Award for his compassion, dedication, and passion for caring for others; Shelby, who earned the second-highest grades in the class, and received a certificate for outstanding attendance; and Kari, Morgan, and Elizabeth.

Along with the challenges of balancing school, work, and family responsibilities, these students worked hard to stay committed to their training. WIOA was proud to support them throughout the program by helping ease some of the financial burdens that can come with pursuing a nursing career.

We are incredibly proud of all our SWVA Works LPN graduates and everything they have worked so hard to achieve. Congratulations to the entire graduating class. We can’t wait to see where this journey takes you next!
