Hot off the press!!!
Check out our October Newsletter!

Be sure to share your Lebanon ghost stories and urban legends below!

A town as old as Lebanon is bound to have a ghost story or two, but are they just urban legends that have gotten scarier over time or is there a spooky truth behind the story?  As a relatively new resident to Lebanon and interested in the history of the quaint little town I now call home, I decided...

It has been brought to our attention that some members and non-members alike are not sure where to look for information from the Lebanon Historical Society.

Here is an update!

The minutes are temporarily being posted in the private group hosted by the society. They will be transferred to our website upon completion. At that time, the Facebook group will be removed.

They will also be sent via email if you have provided your email address. A monthly newsletter will accompany the minutes. Our social media manager took a short leave of absence but has returned this month. If you would like to receive the newsletter, please send us your email address via messenger and we will happily add you to our mailing list!

Updates from the society regarding social events will be posted on this page. As most of you know, this is a volunteer organization and with that comes challenges. We are working to address them. If you have suggestions, please bring them to the next scheduled meeting.

For example, if you attended a historical program and are expecting an update, go ahead and let us know if you enjoyed it, what you took away from the presentation, and any fun historical information you learned. This is a super helpful way to engage our community AND help all of us volunteers! The name of our game is TEAMWORK here!

Other informational requests can be sent via messenger or via email to our President.

Thank you!

Earth Work!

The Lebanon Historical Society’s program series for August will feature the Conservation Education Representative for Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. On Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. in Lebanon’s Visitors’ Center on the brick street, Mr. Justin Smock will discuss the Mississippian mound-building culture of one thousand years ago.

Lebanon’s own Emerald Mound is located about two miles north of town and according to Harrison Church is “surprisingly geometrically shaped in the form of a truncated pyramid….with its four corners directed at the four points of the compass.”

The LHS business meeting will follow starting at 7:30 p.m. Visitors are welcome to stay or go for the business portion of the evening.

07/07/2022

This is just a friendly reminder that there will be no meeting of the Lebanon Historical Society during the month of July due to summer vacations. We will resume with the next historical program series at 6:30 p.m. followed by a business meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at the Visitors' Center.

Lebanon's small-town character is the thing the majority of people like most about our special town, therefore, it is our belief that historic preservation efforts be initiated, implemented, and upheld.

Juneteenth, a day commemorating the end of Slavery in the United States. Originally celebrated in Galveston, Texas to mark the day in 1865 when Federal Troops arrived to take control and ensure that enslaved people were freed.

It was not until June of 2021 that the long celebrated holiday was made a federal holiday.

Read more here:

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) is a holiday commemorating this day, which marked the effective end of slavery in the United States.
