Today, we mourn the passing of former Buchanan County Sheriff C. Ray Foster.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Sheriff Foster’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of serving alongside him. May he rest in peace.

From a kill shelter in California to a narcotics detection dog in Russell County, VA.

K-9 Nova has been with Deputy Erik Hinchey for about 4 weeks now. She performs in order to receive praise. She LIVES for it!! So let’s give her a big, warm welcome to Southwest Virginia!!

Get to know you're College Safety Resources. Becareful posting your location on Social Media. Learn about safe apps, and download the life 360 app as a family and with friends. If something doesn't sound or feel right .. remove yourself safely from the situation. Wishing all College Students a safe school year..Be safe..Be Smart..See something say something!

We are incredibly proud and honored to receive a No-Kill Award!
This award is to recognize the achievement of a save rate of 90% or more for animals that have came to our shelter. This recognition represents the dedication of our staff, veterinarian Dr. Michelle Meister Jones, Animal Control/Russell County Sheriffs Office, volunteers and rescue partners. Because of our community and teams support, countless shelter animals have been given the opportunity to find loving forever homes.

Russell County Sheriff’s Office K9 Nova to get donation of body
armor

Russell County Sheriff’s Office, VA - K9 Nova will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Nova’s vest was sponsored by the Virginia L. Stoner Huguenard Endowment Fund of Corunna, IN and will be embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of Virginia L. Stoner Huguenard”. Delivery is expected within ten weeks.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and
National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,631 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old, actively employed, and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Each vest has a value of $1800.00, weighs an average of 4-5 lbs., and comes with a five-year warranty. For more information, or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call (508) 824-

Russell County Sheriff's Office wants to introduce "K9 Nova"

Nova is a three-year-old German shepherd mix. She is a dedicated narcotics detection canine purchased from Sector K9 in Waxahachie Texas. She is certified through the American Working Dog Association. Nova was discovered at a euthanize shelter in Los Angeles County, California. She was adopted after an alert citizen recognized her drive for consideration of Police work. Nova was adopted, transferred to Texas, where she went through her training. She was purchased by the Russell County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from a business owner in Texas. A 17 Hour road trip was completed to meet, train, and transport Nova back to Virginia. She is now employed with the Russell County Virginia Sheriff's Office as our latest detection canine to combat narcotics within our county. Congratulations!
