Dear Kindergarten and 5th Grade Families,
We are excited to invite our Kindergarten and 5th Grade students to a special Grandparents & Grand Friends Breakfast at Hattie B. Stokes Elementary!

Date: Friday, September 18
Time: 7:30–8:30 AM
Location: Hattie B. Stokes Elementary

Grandparents and Grand Friends are invited to bring their student to school and enjoy a special morning together. We will have:
🍩 Donuts and breakfast treats
🎨 A fun activity to enjoy together
📸 A special photo opportunity
📚 Time to visit our Book Fair
🐯 A chance to visit Hattie B. and spend some special time together!

We know that not every grandparent is able to attend. A Grand Friend can be any special friend or family member who would like to fill that role for your child.

Why Kindergarten & 5th Grade?
We want grandparents and grand friends to have an opportunity to visit Hattie B. during two special milestones: a student's first year and last year of elementary school! Our Kindergarten students are beginning their elementary adventure, while our 5th graders are preparing to complete theirs. This particular event is just for Kindergarten and 5th Grade students and we ask that siblings in other grades not attend this event, but don't worry! We will have additional family events throughout the school year that include students and families from all grade levels.
We hope our grandparents and grand friends will join us for donuts, smiles, books, and a wonderful morning at Hattie B.!

RSVP BY SEPTEMBER 11!
Please RSVP by filling out the form linked below or by following the QR code located on parent square.

An RSVP is required so that we can be prepared for breakfast and other activities.

🐅🚨 NEW STAFF ALERT! 🚨🐅

Help us give a big Hattie B. Stokes welcome to Ms. Ashley Winn, our newest Special Education Teacher!

“I’m Ashley Winn, a dedicated special education teacher who is passionate about helping students recognize their strengths, build confidence, and reach their fullest potential. I’m a proud mom of five, a role that has helped shape my patience, compassion, and commitment to supporting others.
I graduated in January with my Master’s degree in Special Education, further strengthening my knowledge and skills to support students with diverse learning needs. For the past four years, I’ve been a valued member of the Westfield Washington School community, where I’ve dedicated myself to creating a supportive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for my students.
Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my family and pets and experiencing one of my favorite things: live music! Whether I’m cheering on my children, supporting my students, or enjoying a concert, I hope to bring enthusiasm, heart, and a genuine love for the people around me to HBS.”

Join us in welcoming Ms. Winn to the Tiger family! We’re so excited to have her at Hattie B. Stokes and can’t wait to see the difference she makes in the lives of our students!

👮🏻‍♂️💙 D.A.R.E. IS IN THE HOUSE! 💙👮🏻‍♂️

Our 5th graders are diving into an important part of their school year through D.A.R.E. — Drug Abuse Resistance Education!

D.A.R.E. is designed to give students the knowledge, confidence, and skills they need to make safe, responsible, and healthy choices. Throughout the program, students learn about topics like resisting peer pressure, making good decisions, communicating effectively, handling difficult situations, and understanding the consequences of their choices.

But D.A.R.E. is about more than just learning about drugs. It’s about helping students develop the skills to stand up for themselves, think before they act, make positive choices, and become confident leaders as they navigate the challenges that come with growing up.

We’re excited for our Tigers to learn, ask questions, have meaningful conversations, and build skills they can carry with them far beyond the classroom!

A special thank you to Officer Kootz, our 5th Grade D.A.R.E. Officer, for helping make these lessons meaningful and engaging for our students!
Making smart choices today helps build a stronger tomorrow!

Be on the lookout for TIGERS tickets!!!

TIGERS Tickets are recognition slips.

A TIGERS Ticket means:
Someone noticed you demonstrating who we want to be at Hattie B. - TIGERS!!!

We Are TIGERS is not a reward program. It is our schoolwide framework for intentionally teaching, practicing, recognizing, and celebrating the behaviors and character traits we want students to develop.

Our goal is not simply to get students to behave appropriately because they may receive a reward. Our goal is to help students understand:

what positive behavior looks and sounds like,

why these behaviors matter,

how their choices affect themselves and others,

and how they can increasingly demonstrate these traits without adult prompting.

The TIGERS traits give our school a common language:
T – Teamwork
I – Integrity
G – Growth Mindset
E – Empowered
R – Responsible
S – Supportive

Any staff member can give a ticket to any student. Keep an eye out! Celebrate when your TIGERS bring one home!!!

🐯💛 Integrity in Action! 💛🐯

Mrs. Wheeler’s 4th grade PE class had a little fun with Sharks and Sailors🦈⛵️ before diving into a meaningful conversation about one of our Tiger Traits: INTEGRITY!

Students talked about how integrity goes far beyond the gym. It means doing the right thing even when no one is watching, being honest, keeping your word, taking responsibility for your choices, and treating others with respect.
Whether they’re in PE, the classroom, on the playground, at home, or with their friends, our Tigers have countless opportunities to show what integrity looks like. Today’s lesson was a great reminder that who we are when no one is watching matters just as much as what we accomplish when everyone is.
