Penn State Master Gardeners of Lebanon County Master Gardeners are volunteers trained by the Penn State College of Agriculture Cooperative Extension On the horizon are rooftop and water gardens.

Lebanon County Master Gardeners support the Penn State Cooperative Extension by presenting research-based consumer horticulture and environmental stewardship best practices to the public. Master Gardeners are volunteers trained by Penn State Cooperative Extensions to help Extensions serve the home gardening public by answering questions, speaking to groups, working with 4-H projects, maintaining d

emonstration gardens, and preparing symposiums and exhibits. The program provides interested individuals with extensive training in many areas of horticulture. In return, participants volunteer their time to share horticultural information that is based on university research and recommendations. Master Gardeners can cover a wide array of topics such as plant selection, composting, soil improvement, pest control, vegetable and flower gardening, pruning, pollinator preservation and so on. State wide functions are carried out by Nancy Knauss, State Master Gardener Coordinator and the State Master Gardener Steering Committee. Floriculturist Sinclair Adam coordinates Lebanon County activities as well as the Penn State flower trials at the Southeast Agricultural Research & Extension Center (SEAREC) in Landisville. The Penn State Master Gardener Program educates volunteers with an interest in and enthusiasm for research based horticulture. In exchange for this extensive training and in order to earn the title of Master Gardener trainees must volunteer at least 50 hours within one year of completing the coursework. Volunteers can serve in any number of ways, such as answering home gardening questions over the phone ("Hort Hotline"), speaking about horticultural topics to groups such as garden clubs, civic organizations, schools, supporting wheel chair gardeners at the VA, maintaining our 4-square garden, assisting with flower trials and pollinator counts to name a few of the opportunities.

The Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Lebanon County invite the public to attend Bonsai Basics: The Art and Care of Miniature Trees on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Lebanon Valley Agricultural Center, 2120 Cornwall Road, Lebanon, PA 17042.
This hands-on introductory workshop:
- will introduce participants to the art and science of bonsai, a centuries-old practice that combines horticulture and artistic design to create beautiful miniature trees.
- will explore the history and guiding principles of bonsai while gaining practical experience in selecting plant material, applying basic design techniques, and choosing appropriate soils, containers, and tools.
- participants will learn essential bonsai care practices, including pruning, wiring, watering, fertilizing, repotting, sanitation, and proper sunlight management.

- the workshop will highlight popular bonsai styles and provide valuable guidance for maintaining healthy and attractive bonsai trees in Pennsylvania's climate.

Whether you are new to bonsai or an experienced gardener looking to develop a new skill, this workshop offers the knowledge and confidence needed to begin creating and caring for your own bonsai trees.

PUBLIC GARDEN OPEN HOUSE SAT August 15th, 9 am-1 pm at Penn State SEAREC research facility in Manheim PA. Events during the Open House include:
- Penn State Master Gardeners of Lebanon County "Meadow to Forest Garden"; a talk on garden pollinators; and plant sales with plugs of hard-to-find straight-species native pollinator plants. Several of our Lebanon County Master Gardeners volunteers in the Bees, Bugs, and Blooms Project garden.
- Lebanon County Master Gardeners will be offering free prairie varieties of native grasses.

NEW in 2026: Our Penn State Master Gardeners of Lebanon County Gardener Meadow to Forest Imagination Garden plant variety additions at SEAREC will be open for visitors to experience educational plant material selections. The garden design is based on research by Doug Tallamy, Heather Holm and Benjamin Vogt as well as public native garden curators.The plant variety additions are based on plant research from two public gardens using plant recommendations from their curators. Mt Cuba Center located in Hockessin, Delaware with their Native Plant Trial research curated by Sam Hoadley, Iowa Arboretum and Garden located in Madrid, Iowa with their Prairie Garden curated by David McKinney.

National Moth Week, held annually during the last full week of July, is a global celebration dedicated to appreciating the often-overlooked beauty, fascinating life cycles, and vital habitats of moths.

Did you know that in America: - There are more moths than butterflies?- There are roughly 14,000 species of moth in North America - More than 150,000 worldwide. As entomologist Doug Tallamy aptly puts it, "For every species of butterfly on the planet, there are 19 species of moth."

Moths are truly incredible garden residents, and you can easily support them by planting native plants. Just like butterflies, moths depend on specific native plants for their survival, from host plants for their caterpillars to nectar sources for the adults. And those moth caterpillars are a critical food source for songbirds.
