Don Kissick for Governor of Ohio and I made a stop at Beaver Mini Mart in Beavercreek. For those that don’t know Buc-cee's is suing them for trademark infringement despite the fact that not only has Beaver Mini Mart has been there forever but the entire town of Beavercreek is named after Beaver themselves.
Don had a good point that it’s in allegory for what we deal with as a Challenger party going up against these large conglomerates but further it’s a testament to the exact type of conversations we’re having with our campaign where large scale corporations and franchisees are bullying the small mom and pop shops. Sometimes it’s easy to think about it as theoretical or philosophical for these changes that we are articulating until it happens in our backyard. And here we are. The large corporations getting tax incentives from the state are monopolizing their way around, constricting the small business owner which is at the detriment to the community.
When you see more robust small business ecosystems you see more thriving in communities overall because not only does that mean I’m probably not underemployed or working multiple jobs- it means that if my daughters school district needs a new sign for their football stadium, I’ll be more likely to pay for it to help her school and market my business. Research shows that communities with greater entrepreneurial activity tend to have lower rates of homelessness, while small businesses have historically generated nearly two-thirds of net new U.S. jobs.
If you get a chance, they’re doing a cash mob until 10 PM tonight at Beavers Mini Mart where you can buy T-shirts and go out and spend $20 to support a local business
