Happy Memorial Day! Sending our heartfelt appreciation to everyone involved in the annual flag replacement at the Avery Stoddard and Gales Ferry Cemeteries.🇺🇸
This meaningful tradition is made possible through the coordinated efforts of local Ledyard cemetery associations, the committee, VFW, and our Scouts.🇺🇸

🌿💪 Cemetery Hero Spotlight! 💪🌿
Matt, one of our newest cemetery adopters, has jumped in headfirst at one of our toughest historic sites, the Capt. Amos Stanton Cemetery!
And let us tell you… this is not a walk in the park. Between the recent heat, vines that fight back like barbed wire, relentless poison ivy, dreaded ticks and mosquitoes, and hours of heavy physical labor, maintaining these sacred grounds takes serious dedication. And that’s before even touching the delicate work of headstone preservation! 🪦
Thankfully, Matt has taken on the challenge with heart, determination, and a true passion for preserving local history. This work is absolutely a labor of love, and we are incredibly grateful for his hard work and commitment to protecting this important piece of our town’s past.
Please join us in giving Matt a huge THANK YOU!👏

We’re often asked just how many cemeteries exist around town, and the answer is: A LOT, more than most residents realize! 🪦🩶🌿
Some are still active burial grounds lovingly maintained by associations and families today. Others are much older and what we refer to as ancient and abandoned, small family plots tied to historic farms and homesteads from centuries past. Sadly over time, a few cemeteries have been lost to overgrowth, neglect, development, or simply being forgotten.
Today we're sharing part of one incredible resource that is still helping us preserve this history, a cemetery location guide created by the Cemetery Committee back in 1964! When compared with the 1996 cemetery book (available at the Ledyard Public Library) it’s clear just how much has changed, and how important preservation efforts continue to be.
That’s why our adopters and volunteers matter so much. Their dedication helps preserve these sacred spaces and protect the stories they hold for future generations. Thanks to those ongoing efforts, we’re also excited to share that a brand new cemetery book is already in the works!

FYI: If you decide to explore and search for old cemeteries, please remember:
🔎 Be respectful
🚫 Do not trespass on private property
🌱 Leave sites exactly as you found them
Together, we can help keep Ledyard’s history visible, protected, and honored for all ages!

The Ledyard Cemetery Committee is pleased to share a wonderful update on the restoration of Maintown Cemetery, the progress so far is truly exciting! Thanks to dedicated volunteer efforts and the support of the state’s Neglected Cemeteries Grant, this historic site is being thoughtfully brought back to life.
Last October, Rocky's Landscaping LLC completed an extensive clearing of the grounds, carefully removing overgrowth and debris. This important first step revealed many long-hidden headstones and fragments, allowing restoration work to begin in earnest.
Following the winter season, Mr. Ken Geer skillfully repaired the cemetery’s stone wall and restored the stepping stones at the entrance. These improvements have already made the space more welcoming for visitors.
As spring arrives and work resumes, the committee will continue cleaning, repairing, and resetting damaged stones. With continued progress, the goal is to have Maintown Cemetery beautifully restored by the fall, honoring its history and ensuring it can be appreciated for generations to come.

Sending our endless gratitude to all who helped bring this together! 🪦🩶

We apologize for the Zoom issues that occurred during our committee meeting last night! Thank you to the residents who participated and provided valuable feedback. One suggestion that we will certainly explore further is organizing a social event for town cemetery associations, sextons, and anyone interested in cemetery preservation. To facilitate future communication, we will be creating a newsletter highlighting events and volunteer opportunities during our 2026 work season.
To be included, please send an email to [email protected]. Thank you again for your participation. We look forward to hearing from you! 🪦🩶
