Gov. Tom Wolf waives fee for volunteers' background checks

Wolf announced today that fees for child abuse clearances and criminal background checks required by the Child Protective Services Law will be waived for volunteers working with children. He also lowered the cost for those clearances for others who are required to obtain them.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health Bureau of EMS has released a FAQ document regarding the Child Protective Services Law and its impact on EMS agencies and EMS providers.

EMS providers are mandated reporters of suspected child abuse. This applies to paid and volunteer EMS providers.

EMS providers are subject to background checks, including the PA Child Abuse History Clearance, the PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Background Check. There are dates, as listed in the above FAQ document, that these background checks must be completed by.

The 2015 BLS Protocol Update (BEMS course #007692 will be considered a core requirement for all levels of EMS providers that register their certification during the current time period.
