Summit Lakes Middle School opened in the fall of 2000 with 481 students and 33 teachers. A team representing the school community created the school's name, including the word "Summit" representing the name of the city Lee's Summit and "Lakes" due to the number of lakes in the community, especially within the attendance area. The students who opened the building were charged with naming the school

mascot and identifying school colors, hence the navy and hunter green Falcons were born. Cliff Sloan, and Mrs. Janette Cooley. Summit Lakes was initially opened with a capacity of 600 students. In 2004, a bond issue funded a planned second phase, increasing the capacity of the school to approximately 1,000 students. Summit Lakes Middle School is located about one mile west of the intersection of State Route 291 and MO-150.

Thank you everyone who came out today to support our SLMS Falcons Flag Football teams for our showcase. The season for these ladies may have been short, but you would never know it by the skills they showed on the field.

The last huddle on the field with Coach Maggio summed up what this sport is about. It's a sport, there will always be a "winner", but when we work as one, cheering each other on, we are ALL winners. This is the heart and soul of a TEAM.

Great job athletes, coaches, and parents on a short, but fun and successful season! We can't wait until next year!

Today SLMS Falcons flew high after studying aerospace, engineering, terminology, and physics while they launched their model rockets to over 800 feet of altitude. We might have some future aerospace engineers on our hands!

Wednesday, May 20th from 3:30-5:00pm.

The Summit Lakes Flag Football Showcase is an exciting end-of-season event where our athletes will have the opportunity to “showcase” their skills and demonstrate everything they have learned during our time together. Players will be divided into teams and compete in a series of games in a fun and supportive tournament-style format.

The showcase will take place at Summit Lakes Middle School from 3:30 PM–5:00 PM and is open to all family members, friends, and supporters who would like to attend and cheer on our athletes. We look forward to celebrating the hard work, growth, and teamwork of all participants!

Who remembers their first day at a new job?

We are excited to officially welcome Maple, our facility dog, to Summit Lakes Middle School! Maple is a Goldendoodle who will support students and staff throughout the school day, primarily based out of the library with librarian Ms. Dampier.

Maple will be spending time in our building these last few days of this school year so that she becomes familiar with the building, routines, staff, and students, and becomes more comfortable with our school community. We are excited for her to continue her work supporting students’ social, emotional, cognitive, and overall well-being next school year.

Facility dogs can help create a calm and welcoming environment for students and may support students in areas such as emotional regulation, stress reduction, social connection, and engagement with learning. As a school community, we will continue teaching students how to interact respectfully and appropriately with Maple to help ensure positive experiences for everyone.

Maple lives with Ms. Dampier and her family. Her younger human sibling will be a Falcon next year, and her older human sibling attends LSW. Maple loves treats when allowed (though never “people food”), playing fetch, and squeaky toys. One of her favorite hobbies is purposefully pushing her ball under furniture and staring at people until they retrieve it for her.

We understand that some students may have allergies, fears, or discomfort around dogs. If you would like your student to opt out of interactions with Maple, please get in touch with Dr. Hardin so we can work together to support your child’s needs.

We are thrilled to have Maple as part of the Falcon family and look forward to the positive impact she will have on our students and school community this year!

7th Graders in FCS (Family & Consumer Sciences) classes are planting, growing, and harvesting "cool weather" plants at SLMS.

In early March students designed garden beds for the Spring and the garden bed design winners had their beds planted in April. Currently they are researching and creating their own homemade dressing to hopefully harvest lettuces and carrots and fix a salad before summer.

The student groups are fully in charge of their beds for planting, watering, and weeding. The teacher is there to provide advice and supplies for their bed to be fully successful. This week students have also started to plant peppers and tomatoes to grow over the summer.

Gardening is a life-long skill that students can walk away from to improve their future in a myriad of ways.
