Substance use and mental health are deeply connected because people may use alcohol or drugs to cope with stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, or emotional pain. Recovery is not about shame; it is about support, healing, and safer coping skills. Three ways to support recovery and mental wellness include encouraging professional help, building a sober support system, and replacing harmful coping habits with healthier tools. For confidential treatment referrals, SAMHSA’s National Helpline is available 24/7 at 1-800-662-HELP (4357), and 988 is available for crisis support. Lee’s Summit CARES works to prevent youth substance misuse and promote mental health through education, parenting support, and community programs.

Teachers and school staff mental health matters because educators carry lesson planning, student needs, parent communication, emotional labor, safety concerns, and burnout while still showing up for others every day. Three ways to support school staff wellness include respecting boundaries, encouraging breaks and support systems, and recognizing the emotional weight of their work. If a teacher or staff member is struggling, they can reach out to an employee assistance program, counselor, trusted colleague, or 988. Lee’s Summit CARES supports youth and families, and that includes uplifting the adults who help guide and protect young people.

LGBTQ+ mental health matters because feeling unsupported, judged, isolated, or unsafe can deeply impact emotional wellness. Acceptance, belonging, and affirming relationships can make a major difference in someone’s mental health. Three ways to support LGBTQ+ mental wellness include using respectful language, creating safe spaces, and listening without trying to change someone’s identity or experience. If someone needs support, they can reach out to a trusted person, counselor, local resource, or call/text 988. Lee’s Summit CARES promotes mental health awareness, youth safety, and community support so everyone feels seen, valued, and connected.

Men’s mental health matters because many men are taught to stay strong, hide emotions, or handle everything alone. But stress, depression, anxiety, grief, and trauma do not disappear just because someone stays quiet. Three ways to support men’s mental wellness include checking in without judgment, encouraging healthy outlets like therapy, exercise, or support groups, and reminding men that asking for help is strength, not weakness. If support is needed, call/text 988, talk with a mental health professional, or connect with trusted community resources. Lee’s Summit CARES believes mental health conversations should include everyone, including the men and boys in our community.

Women’s mental health matters because many women carry pressure from work, school, family, relationships, caregiving, body image, safety concerns, and emotional expectations. Stress may show up as anxiety, exhaustion, people-pleasing, sadness, or feeling overwhelmed. Three ways to support women’s mental wellness include setting boundaries, building supportive relationships, and making space for rest without guilt. If someone needs help, they can reach out to a counselor, trusted loved one, healthcare provider, or 988. Lee’s Summit CARES encourages education, connection, and mental health conversations that support stronger families and communities.

Mental health in low-income communities matters because financial stress, housing instability, food insecurity, transportation barriers, and limited access to care can all affect emotional wellness. Stress is not just personal; it can also be connected to the resources people do or do not have around them. Three ways to support mental wellness include connecting people with local resources, reducing shame around asking for help, and building supportive community spaces. If someone is struggling, they can contact 988, a local support agency, school counselor, or community organization. Lee’s Summit CARES works to strengthen youth, families, and community well-being through prevention, education, and connection.

Workplace mental health matters because stress from long hours, burnout, toxic environments, financial pressure, heavy workloads, or lack of work-life balance can affect emotional and physical well-being. Many employees feel pressure to stay productive even when they are overwhelmed, exhausted, or struggling silently. Three ways to support workplace mental wellness include encouraging healthy boundaries, creating supportive and respectful work environments, and taking breaks to rest and recharge when needed. If someone is struggling, they can talk with a trusted person, counselor, employee assistance program, or call/text 988 for support. Lee’s Summit CARES promotes prevention, education, and community wellness by encouraging conversations that help individuals, families, and workplaces build healthier support systems.
