Spotlight

We want to remind residents of the wonderful Adaptive Recreation camps and programs offered by Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS). At PRCS we provide all individuals the opportunity to participate in recreational programs to enhance their quality of life while fostering a community of respect, acceptance, and inclusion. Activities include sports, trips, cooking classes, arts and crafts, and much more!

A specific program that Adaptive Recreation partners with is Arts for All Loudoun, a nonprofit organization created to bring together people with and without disabilities in an inclusive environment to learn about, participate in and enjoy the arts. Arts for All Loudoun will bring a tale as old as time to the stage with the musical Beauty and the Beast at our own Franklin Park Arts Center. This incredible production, and opportunity provided for all, is truly a wonder that we encourage you to attend this March.

Have you visited one of Loudoun County’s most unique ‘hidden’ treasures? Only a short drive from Historic Downtown Leesburg and nestled alongside two miles of Goose Creek, a State Scenic River, lies Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve. The preserve’s 695 acres of forests, succession fields, ponds, and streams provide residents the chance to explore and experience the exceptional beauty of Loudoun’s natural habitats, wetlands, and waterways.

Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve is a designated Virginia Treasure as part of the Commonwealth’s Virginia Treasures initiative for conserving land and expanding access to public outdoor recreation. The area is protected through a conservation easement held with the Virginia Outdoors Foundation and Loudoun County's only nature preserve.

Featuring 20 miles of hiking trails, highlights of the preserve also include a discovery center, three ponds, historic buildings, and one of the largest pollinator habitats in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The preserve is home to deer, beavers, foxes, bears, coyotes, and bats, amphibians, reptiles and over 150 species of birds have been spotted by local birdwatchers. There are also some 200 species of wildflowers visited by more than 120 species of native bees.

The first-ever charter of the Virginia Master Naturalist Program in the commonwealth was also established at Banshee Reeks Nature. The volunteer master naturalists are stewards in helping Virginia conserve and manage natural resources and public lands and teach courses in native plants, mammals, environmental sustainability, reptiles, geological history, building habitats, raptors, exploring nature, and beyond.

From wildlife programs to nature sketching, there is always something to explore in your own backyard at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve - even after dark at one of the preserve’s monthly full moon hikes. There you may hear firsthand how the preserve got its name. According to the legend from the Friends of Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, one night in the early part of the 19th century the then-owner of the land went into the town of Leesburg to attend to personal business and paid a visit to the local saloon. While traveling back to the farm, the wind howled, and the animals of the night made much noise. Upon arriving home, he was in such a state of mind that he claimed that he heard a banshee on the reeks. The phrase was altered over the years and the area became known as “Banshee Reeks”.

For more information on the Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve as part of , visit www.loudoun.gov/bansheereeks or on Facebook at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve. Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve is located at 21085 The Woods Road, Leesburg, Virginia. For additional information or questions please contact us at [email protected].
