On Sunday, February 22, 2026, the Public Safety Cadets (PSC) community suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of Dunwoody, Georgia Police Major William “Rusty” Furman. Rusty was not only an exceptional leader and mentor for the PSC but also a cherished friend. His passing after a courageous battle with cancer has left everyone at PSC heartbroken. To say we are devastated does not fully capture the depth of our grief.

Rusty and the Dunwoody Police Department were among the very first law enforcement agencies to partner with PSC in January 2019, and their commitment has only grown stronger over time. Rusty’s leadership was vital in organizing and leading the 2021 and 2023 PSC NCTC Summer Showdowns. He later took on the role of Chairman for the NCTC Planning Committee, where he skillfully managed the highly successful 2025 Summer Showdown in Ontario, CA. His dedication, vision, and hard work have left a lasting mark on the program and its members.

I could always rely on Rusty for support, guidance, and wise counsel. Even as he faced the greatest challenge of his life, he remained positive and encouraging, never letting on how difficult his battle truly was. Knowing Rusty was a privilege and calling him my friend is an honor. His influence has made me, and so many others, better people.

Rusty will be laid to rest on Thursday, February 26, 2026. Visitation will take place from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Westridge Church, located at 3522 Hiram Acworth Hwy, Dallas, GA 30157. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, Rusty’s family requests that donations be made to the Law Enforcement Experience Association of Georgia, an organization Rusty led for several years.

We ask everyone to keep Rusty’s beloved wife, Michelle, their children, and his extended family in blue, including Chief Mike Carlson and all the members of the Dunwoody Police Department in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Rusty. We have the watch from here.

In 2021, more law enforcement officers were struck and killed on America’s roadways than in any point in history. Obey the law and help keep our officers safe!

Did you know children are twice as likely to be hit and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year? Be sure to use caution when driving in residential areas tonight. Slow down and be prepared to stop for pedestrians.
