Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update: Serological Tests

Not all tests for COVID-19 are the same. Diagnostic testing is the throat or mouth swab that has been in use for several months to test whether someone is infectious with COVID-19 at that time. Newer serologic tests look for previous infection to COVID-19 by checking for antibodies in the blood. Current serologic tests may not have gone through FDA review (https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/coronavirus-covid-19-update-serological-tests) and, more importantly, may not be able to tell the difference between strains of coronavirus (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/types.html). If you are considering an antibody test, first ask whether the test is specific for COVID-19; if not, then a positive result could give you a false sense that you are immune to COVID-19 when in fact you just had the common cold.

Home and Commercial Kitchen-Based Businesses and Food Service Vendors

https://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/dairy-kitchen-food-services-businesses.shtml
With folks staying at home and restrictions on restaurants, a number of people are starting to advertise home catering options. It is important to note that these people, while well intentioned, are likely not to be operating legally, and may pose an increased risk food borne disease. Cooking for catering is very different than cooking for a family or a party. Before ordering from any home caterer, please ask them to provide their catering license to keep yourself and your family safe.

Food establishments, including private homes, that manufacture, process, pack or hold food for sale are subject to the Virginia Food Laws and related regulations. It is unlawful to operate a food business until it has been inspected. (Note these exceptions from inspection.)

Coronavirus 19 thoughts

**If you think you have Coronavirus DON’T show up in your doctors office or urgent care, if you catch the office off guard you will expose the entire office, or facility and shut the entire office down for 2 weeks, please DO call so your concerns can be address and triaged in a safe manner.

1. China and Singapore have contained it, which means it is possible
2. Most recent fatality rate is 3.4 percent, so please do prepare, it’s going to be a rough ride
3. Stock up on non perishables, there will be a run on grocery stores. But keep in mind this virus will be with us for a long long time, which is why hoarding is of limited value.
4. Get your flu shots, it will make it easier for your doctor to understand when the Coronavirus is hitting your area.
5. Don’t hoard masks, you will increase the spread of the virus as medical professionals wont have access to them.
6. Don’t let your guard down this October, that is when it is most likely to do the most damage. In the 1918 Flu epidemic, there was a respite during the summer months during which the virus spread, and then in October came back with a vengeance claiming many of the lives lost to the epidemic..
7. If you are over 60 and have the option to stay at home you should
8. Coronavirus is now local in Loudoun County. I would expect at least hundreds of cases by the end of the month. The great thing is that social distancing is working in Loudoun County so far, still only 5 cases in the last week.
9. If you have been exposed and you have a cold assume it is Coronavirus, save someone parents/grandparents life and please stay home.
10. Commercial labs testing is now available so your primary doc should be able to test for it, although testing supplies are extremely limited.
11. All of the above is subject to change as the situation is rapidly evolving
12. Children and young adults only experience the Coronavirus as a mild cold, there are almost no fatalities in this age group.
13. Majority of deaths are in elderly, 99 percent of whom had hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. Eat your salads and exercise!!
