Staff from the County Department of Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Developmental Services (MHSADS) will take part in the second annual International Overdose Awareness Day candlelight vigil on Monday, August 31, 7:00 p.m., at the Charles Hamilton Courthouse in Leesburg to provide information about local services and resources, as well as free naloxone nasal spray while supplies last.

The "red meat allergy" you've been hearing about? It's a real thing!

The allergy is actually to a molecule called alpha-gal, which is why it is officially known as Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS). Alpha-gal is present in most mammals besides humans. When a tick bites a person, it can transfer alpha-gal into the blood, triggering an immune response.

AGS is most often linked to the lone star tick, which is found in . The best way to protect yourself is to prevent tick bites. Learn more about tick safety at loudoun.gov/lyme.

Get your FREE tick kit while you learn about Lyme disease and tick safety tips from our knowledgeable staff at the Lovettsville Community Center on Thursday, August 20, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Kits include tweezers and tick identification cards, and are available while supplies last.

Can't make it? Find information about tick safety and prevention anytime at loudoun.gov/lyme.

We hope you will join us on Thursday, August 20 from 10am to 11am for our Social Seniors program (ages 55+)! The Health Department will share tips for preventing tick bites, how to safely remove a tick, and the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease. Q&A will follow. If you wouldn't ride a motorcycle without a helmet, don't ride an e-bike without one either! According to the CDC, e-bikes are on the same level as motorcycles when it comes to injuries and accidents. Many serious head injuries are preventable when riders wear helmets.
