The Message of Measles

As public-health officials confront the largest outbreak in the U.S. in decades, they’ve been fighting as much against dangerous ideas as they have against the disease.

Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Prevention in Adults| CDC

Whooping cough (pertussis) can be a very serious infection in infants. They depend on your being vaccinated to keep them safe, but protection wanes over time. Have you gotten your Tdap booster? https://www.cdc.gov/pertussis/about/prevention/adults.html

Vaccine protection for pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, and diphtheria fades with time. Therefore, CDC recommends a single dose of Tdap for adults 19 or older who have not previously received a Tdap vaccine. CDC recommends adults receive a tetanus and diphtheria booster (called Td) every 10 year...

Achievements in Public Health, 1900-1999 Impact of Vaccines Universally Recommended for Children -- United States, 1990-1998

Routine childhood vaccination in the U.S. prevents approximately 42,000 deaths and 20 million cases of disease, with net savings of nearly $14 billion in direct costs and $69 billion in total societal costs. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00056803.htm

At the beginning of the 20th century, infectious diseases were widely prevalent in the United States and exacted an enormous toll on the population. For example, in 1900, 21,064 smallpox cases were reported, and 894 patients died (1). In 1920, 469,924 measles cases were reported, and 7575 patients d...

Never leave infants, children, pets or anyone in a car. On hot days, cars reach dangerously high heat levels very quickly even with the windows cracked open and infants and children are at high risk of getting heat stroke or dying.

Follow these tips from the CDC to make sure you do not forget a child in the back seat:

-Every time you leave your car, check the back seat to make sure all children are out of the car. Do not overlook any children who may have fallen asleep.

-When traveling with children, keep a stuffed animal in the front seat as a visual reminder of children in the back.

In this extreme heat, please make sure to be careful with your outdoor activities. Plan outdoor activities for when the coolest times of day: mornings and evenings. When you are outside, take plenty of breaks in the shade and drink plenty of water.

Pace yourself with exercising and outdoor work, especially if you are not used to being outdoors in the extreme heat. If any activity in the heat is making your heart pound or leaves you gasping for breath, STOP the activity and get into a cool, shady spot.

Beat the extreme heat, by staying hydrated. Follow these tips on staying hydrated from the CDC:

Drink more fluids. Drink fluids before you are thirsty. Avoid very sugary and alcoholic drinks. Also avoid very cold drinks because they can cause stomach cramping. Replace salt and minerals by finding low-sugar drink options that can replace the salt and minerals you lose from sweating.

Many people think that smelling chlorine at the pool means that the water is clean, but that’s incorrect. What you are smelling are chemicals that form when chlorine mixes with pee, poop, and sweat from different swimmers bodies. #WaterSafetyWednesday
