Loudoun Museum A museum dedicated to preserving and sharing the long history of Loudoun County With a collection of over 8,000 artifacts, we have something for everybody.

We have artifacts on display from many events and eras in Loudoun County's past, and plenty to learn about Loudoun’s role in everything from wine production to the Civil War. Right in the backyard of Washington, D.C., our history is the Nation’s history, but our county is one of a kind. Come by and find out for yourself.

A secret mission. A staged desertion. A plot to capture Benedict Arnold.

In 1780, Gen. George Washington and Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee picked Loudoun County's Sgt. Maj. John Champe for a top-secret mission: capture Benedict Arnold to bring him to justice.

To pull it off, Champe staged a desertion and soon entered British Army undercover. When a last-minute change of ruined the plans to capture Arnold, Champe pivoted and spent months gathering vital intelligence before escaping back to his unit in 1781.

Happy National Dog Day! 🐾 Today we are taking a look at “Dog Money” and the American Water Spaniel featured on the currency.

Leesburg Municipal "Dog Money" was created in 1861 in response to a currency shortage following secession. The town issued its own series of banknotes to meet the high demand for small change. While technically illegal at first, the Virginia General Assembly officially authorized cities and towns to issue notes. "Dog Money" kept the economy running.

Today in History...

On August 23, 1810, Middleburg founder Leven Powell, died after a long life and career as a merchant, landowner, commander, and politician in Loudoun County. Powell was a Patriot during the Revolutionary War serving in the militia and Continental Army. He fought alongside many other Loudoun soldiers at the Battles of Long Island, Brandywine, and Monmouth. Powell turned his military status into political prowess, holding seats in the Virginia House of Delegates nearly continuously from 1779 to 1793, then being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from 1799 to 1801.
