MOVE OVER. SLOW DOWN. YIELD. IT’S THE LAW.

Deputies are seeing an increase in drivers failing to comply with Georgia laws designed to protect first responders, roadside workers, and the motoring public.

🚨 Georgia’s Move Over Law (O.C.G.A. § 40-6-16) requires drivers approaching a stationary law enforcement vehicle, fire truck, ambulance, tow truck, utility vehicle, or highway maintenance vehicle displaying emergency or warning lights to move over to the next lane when safe to do so. If changing lanes is not possible, drivers must slow down below the posted speed limit and be prepared to stop.

🚨 Georgia’s Emergency Vehicle Right-of-Way Law (O.C.G.A. § 40-6-74) requires drivers to yield the right of way to approaching emergency vehicles operating with emergency lights and/or sirens. Drivers must move as close as possible to the right-hand edge of the roadway and stop until the emergency vehicle has passed.

If a deputy initiates a traffic stop, activate your turn signal and pull over in a safe location as soon as practical. Stopping promptly and safely helps protect you, the deputy, and other motorists.

These laws are not merely traffic regulations. They help ensure that deputies, firefighters, EMS personnel, tow operators, utility workers, highway crews, and other emergency responders make it home safely to their families.

The next time you see flashing lights:

➡️ Move over when you can.
➡️ Slow down when you can’t.
➡️ Yield to approaching emergency vehicles.
➡️ Stay alert and avoid distractions.
➡️ Give first responders room to work safely.

Every traffic stop, crash scene, disabled vehicle, road construction zone, and emergency response creates hazards for those working alongside our roadways. Your attention and cooperation can make the difference between a routine day and a tragedy.

Help us keep Lee County’s roads safe for everyone.
