This sounds like a fascinating local Black History Month talk! Details below ⬇️

Join us online Monday to explore an incredible resource for local Black history research.

In a virtual presentation, Loudoun County’s Historic Records Division will walk you through their archive of digitized court documents that shed light on the lives of free Black and enslaved people between 1757-1866. These documents include birth and death records, court cases, and deeds of emancipation — like this 1788 certificate of freedom for a local man named Peter Warrick. You’ll get to hear about case studies locating family history in Loudoun County and how you can use these records for your own research, as well as what the documents tell us about the nature of freedom in a slave society.

The library is closed Monday, Feb. 15, for Presidents Day. We’ll see you Tuesday! In the meantime, here’s a toast to the country’s first Reader-in-Chief and his love of books. 📚❤️ Did you know, George Washington…

• Had over 1,200 titles in his personal library at the time of his death? The most popular topics were: politics, economics and law (33%), agriculture (14%), and religion and philosophy (14%).

• May have read “Don Quixote” based on a casual conversation at the home of Benjamin Franklin? He eventually owned two copies of the iconic novel — one of which he purchased in Philadelphia on the same day he signed the Constitution.

• Offered access to his library as a perk of being his secretary? In 1797 he wrote, “I have a great many instructive Books, on many subjects, as well as amusing ones.”

This information was adapted from George Washington's Mount Vernon (“Take Note! George Washington the Reader,” available at https://buff.ly/3a8F6u5). Be sure to search our catalog for further reading.
