in in 1950, George C. Marshall became the U.S. Secretary of Defense. Marshall – who was the first former career military officer to hold the position – brought unrivaled experience to the office, having served as Army Chief of Staff and Secretary of State.
As Defense Secretary, Marshall played a critical role in re-shaping America's flagging strategy during the early stages of the Korean War and worked to strengthen the coordination and readiness of U.S. forces during a tense period early in the Cold War.
Marshall’s tenure ended in September of 1951 when he retired to Dodona Manor in Leesburg, Virginia after 49 years of public service.
His wisdom and remarkable dedication to public service continue to inspire leaders today. We are proud to play a role in bringing to life the timeless values Marshall embodied to develop visionary leaders worldwide.
