It’s been a very busy few weeks for all of us at Northern Berks EMS, to say the least!

In addition to responding to our regular 911 calls, our crews had the opportunity to provide EMS coverage at the Berks County Fair, helping ensure the safety of everyone attending this year’s event.

We also recently came together for our ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) refresher training. These courses ensure our providers stay current with the latest evidence-based medical practices while sharpening critical skills that may not be used every day but are essential when seconds count.

We’re proud of the dedication our crews continue to show—both on the ambulance and in the classroom—as we remain committed to providing the highest level of care to the communities we serve.

Today, the Northern Berks EMS family is asking our community to come together for one of our own.

Our friend, coworker, and EMT-Intermediate Jason Steranko suffered a heart attack last week and is scheduled to undergo open-heart surgery on Monday at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest.

Jason has dedicated his entire life to public safety, spending countless hours serving and protecting others. Whether responding to medical emergencies, helping those in crisis, or supporting his fellow first responders, Jason has always answered the call with compassion, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to his community.

Now, Jason and his wife need our support.

We ask that you please keep Jason, his wife, and their family in your thoughts and prayers. We pray for the skilled hands guiding his surgeons, strength for Jason as he faces this challenge, peace and comfort for his wife throughout this journey, and a successful surgery followed by a full and speedy recovery.

At Northern Berks EMS, we often say we are more than an ambulance service—we are a family. Today, one member of that family needs all of us.

Jason, thank you for a lifetime of selfless service. Your Northern Berks EMS family is standing beside you every step of the way, and we look forward to welcoming you back when you're ready.

Please join us in lifting Jason and his family up with your prayers, love, and encouragement. ❤️🚑

Northern Berks EMS Responds to Increased Call Volume During Extreme Heat at the Leesport Big Boy Event

This afternoon, Northern Berks EMS provided on-site medical standby coverage for the Leesport Big Boy event in Berks County. Due to the National Weather Service’s extreme heat warnings, we proactively increased staffing levels and deployed additional resources to ensure the safety of attendees.

In addition to responding to medical emergencies throughout the event, our crews established a shaded cooling area, distributed bottled water, and provided heat safety information to help reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

As temperatures continued to climb, Northern Berks EMS experienced a significant increase in emergency medical calls, both at the event and throughout our service area. Our crews also responded to mutual aid requests from neighboring EMS agencies experiencing similar high call volumes related to the extreme heat.

We encourage everyone to stay hydrated, limit prolonged exposure to the sun, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, and check on elderly neighbors and other vulnerable individuals during this dangerous heat wave.

Northern Berks EMS remains committed to providing exceptional emergency medical care to our communities, even during periods of increased demand.
