Leicester Elementary School PTO donates communication board to Integrated Preschool
LEICESTER — On Monday, the Leicester Integrated Preschool held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the installation of a new playground communication board, an important addition that will help ensure all students can engage, connect, and communicate during play.
The project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Tracy Rodwill, secretary of the Leicester Elementary School PTO, and preschool Speech-Language Pathologist Sarah Swift. With support from the PTO, the board was purchased and donated through the Flutie Foundation.
Communication boards like this provide students with speech and language challenges, including those with Childhood Apraxia of Speech, autism, or other communication needs, a way to express themselves on the playground. By offering visual symbols and language supports, the board helps give every child a voice during unstructured playtime, fostering inclusion and meaningful peer interaction.
For Rodwill, this project is especially personal. Her son, Donovan, a student in the Leicester Integrated Preschool, has been diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech, a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to coordinate the movements needed for speech. Donovan currently communicates using limited verbal speech, sign language, and a high-tech communication device. The addition of the playground communication board will provide him and other students like him with greater opportunities to communicate and participate alongside their peers during play.
“I’m so thankful that, as a community, we were able to provide a more inclusive play experience for all children,” Rodwill shared.
The Leicester Elementary School community is proud to support initiatives that prioritize inclusion and belonging. The PTO continues to play a vital role in enhancing student experiences, demonstrating the powerful impact of dedicated volunteers working together to support both students and staff.
