If you see activity around the involving the US Coast Guard, local fire & rescue/EMS, and local law enforcement, around the village of Leland, this morning, it’s only a training drill.

You may see activity at Hancock Field and near the Leland Harbor from 10am until 2pm.

Update - 9:50pm: The gas line has been repaired and the roadway is reopened. All units have cleared the scene.

🚨Road closure 🚨

South Manitou M-22 between South Schomberg Road and Good Harbor Trail will be closed to all traffic until further notice for active natural gas leak. A 6” gas main was struck.

Units assigned: Chief 501, Engine 511, Engine 512, Alpha 592, Alpha 593, Utility 585

Special recognition to Fire Chief Dan Besson and Captain/EMS Director Chase Schelling for completing the Fire-Rescue International’s 5k, at their conference in Kansas City, MO, this morning. The 5K was a fundraiser for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF). Runners ran as a tribute to those FDNY firefighters lost on 9/11 - 25 years ago next month! Way to represent the department, and Northern Michigan, Chief Besson and Captain Schelling! RIP Lt. D’Atri and FF. Garvey - both of Squad 1 - who were represented by Team Leland Fire. May your sacrifice never be forgotten. “It was an honor to compete in the FRI’s first 5k event, bringing attention to the incredible work the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation does for the families of those lost in the line of duty.” says Captain Schelling, adding “Special thank you to the Leland Township Professional Firefighters Local 5120 for sponsoring Team Leland Fire this year!”.

Today, our new ambulance passed an inspection with the State of Michigan and is now in service!

This new ambulance, Alpha 592, replaced a 10 year-old ambulance that has served the community well and was due for replacement.

This 4x4 ambulance was custom designed and built with feedback from our providers to meet the needs of Leland Township. It is an identical twin to our other ambulance, which will help will help ensure consistency in operations now that each station will now have an identical ambulance.

LELAND TOWNSHIP FIRE & RESCUE BECOMES THE FIRST "SAFE SLEEP" CERTIFIED AGENCY IN LEELANAU, BENZIE, AND GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTIES

Earlier this month, The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services certified our agency as a "safe sleep" agency. What does this mean? Leland Township Fire & Rescue personnel are properly trained in infant safe sleep education and, as a trusted source of information, understand how to provide that information to families within our community.

As part of our Community Risk Reduction (CRR) efforts, department personnel may encounter families with infants during EMS responses, home visits, public education events, or other community interactions. This training helps personnel provide consistent, evidence-based education aimed at reducing sleep-related infant deaths.

DID YOU KNOW? A Michigan baby dies every 2 ‐ 3 days due to sleep‐related causes. Sleep-related infant deaths are those where something in the baby's sleep environment (blankets, pillows, people, pets, etc.) likely contributed to the death.

"I am truly proud of Sasha Moore, our Community Risk Reduction Coordinator, and her efforts to make us more educated in the ways we can reduce risk. By looking at the map and the list (see attached photos) you can see there are less than 35 Safe Sleep certified fire or EMS agencies, in the State of Michigan, so this was not a small endeavor that she undertook. You don't become Safe Sleep certified without a motivated risk reduction leader and the buy in of every department member" says Fire Chief Dan Besson, adding " This is another shining example of the incredible pride we have serving the community!".

Greetings from the Sunshine State! 🌴 🏖️ ☀️ 🌴

Chief Besson and Captain/EMS Director Chase Schelling are currently in Winter Park, at the Road Rescue & Wheeled Coach plant, conducting the final inspection on the new Alpha 592.

Road Rescue & Wheeled Coach build ambulances for lots of places including the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), the City of Tampa, and the City of Chicago.

It’s scheduled to be shipped within the next few weeks to the vendor (EV+) in Holland, MI for some equipment install and should be in Leland Township soon thereafter!

Mutual Aid Appreciation!

On Tuesday, May 27th, Leland Township Fire & Rescue (LTFR) was dispatched to a medical emergency at the Whaleback Trail near the bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. In a coordinated team effort, based on the location obtained by our county 911 call takers, the patient was located and assessed. Due to the difficult access points and terrain - the decision was made to carry the patient back to the area of the trailhead - quite a distance away.

Although we had limited cell and radio coverage, we were able to call for some assistance to help us safely carry the patient,and necessary equipment, to an awaiting LTFR ambulance. The patient was carried along a narrow, wooded, and twisting trail, where after an hour and a half from the time of the 911 call, the patient was safely on their way to Munson Medical Center. They are expected to make a full recovery.

We’d like to thank our friends and neighbors for their help!
