Another property tax increase is coming for Cook County homeowners. $743.8 million has been added to the tax burden as a result of bad policy coming out of Springfield, burdening local municipalities and pushing the total above $19.9 billion, a 3.9% increase that outpaced inflation. Homeowners will absorb nearly $600 million of that increase. Families and seniors cannot keep watching a larger share of their income disappear simply to remain in their homes.
Illinois House Republicans have introduced a broad range of solutions during the 104th General Assembly:
âś… Direct relief and reduced reliance on property taxes: HB 9, HB 1495, HB 5611 and HB 5612
âś… Protections against rapidly rising assessments and bills, along with stronger homeowner and senior exemptions: HB 1496, HB 1746, HB 2639, HB 2640, HB 2641, HB 3723, HB 3724, HB 4010, HB 4011 and HB 4626
âś… Greater voter control, transparency and accountability: HB 1024, HB 1142, HB 1222, HB 1321, HB 1323, HB 2543, HB 2642 and HB 5550
These proposals would deliver direct relief, strengthen exemptions, limit sudden increases, return excessive reserves to taxpayers, stop bond rollovers, reform TIF districts and give residents a stronger voice before taxes rise. Illinois families deserve action. I will continue urging the majority party to give these proposals the hearings and votes they deserve!
