Here is a reminder from our friends at the Village Of Village of Crete Emergency Management Agency of how the Outdoor Warning System operates.

🌪️ Severe Weather Reminder: How Our Outdoor Warning Sirens Work 🚨

As we head into severe weather season, we want to remind residents about our outdoor warning siren system and how it helps keep the community safe.

Our sirens are connected to real-time weather alerts from the National Weather Service and can be activated quickly automatically or by emergency personnel when a tornado warning is issued for our area or if significant severe threat exits. This includes the ability to target specific locations based on the path of a storm, helping ensure timely alerts where they’re needed most.

✔️ Rapid Activation – Sirens can sound automatically or be activated by authorized emergency personnel.
✔️ Targeted Alerts – Siren activation is based on the official tornado warning area and or reported and observed conditions. If any portion of the warning polygon includes our community, all outdoor warning sirens will sound to ensure consistent notification for residents.
✔️ Real-Time Monitoring – Emergency staff can monitor and manage the system at any time.

⏱️ This system helps provide critical early warning so you can take shelter as quickly as possible.

⚠️ Remember: Outdoor warning sirens are meant to alert those who are outside. They may not be heard indoors. Once sirens stop it does not mean the threat is over, tune to local news or radio for further information.

➡️ Always have multiple ways to receive warnings:
• Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on your phone
• NOAA Weather Radio
• Local news and weather apps

Being prepared and staying informed can make all the difference.

Heads up! A threat for severe weather will return to the region on Monday, especially in the orange shaded area. We’re still four days away from the storm system arriving, so adjustments in the forecast are all but likely. Even so, stay up to date on the forecast as we get closer.

04/18/2026

A line of strong to severe thunderstorms will cross the area from west to east this evening. The main threats will be damaging straight line winds, embedded, isolated tornadoes, and large hail. Torrential downpours will lead to at least isolated ponding or flash flooding where rainfall is most intense.

Excited to be attending the 2026 IESMA Training Summit in Springfield this week. Looking forward to collaborating, learning, and networking with colleagues and meeting new ones.

There remains the potential for severe weather later today across the region (Threat Level 2 and 3 of 5). Confidence in whether storms develop or move into the area prior to late evening here locally remains low. However, if they do, conditions are favorable for them to quickly become severe with all hazards possible! The highest tornado and destructive hail threat remains across far northern Illinois (north of black dashed line). Additional storms are then expected through the overnight hours. Have multiple ways to receive warning information, including ways to wake you up at night!
