This past week the Eagles had the pleasure of hosting Mr. George Retelas & Mr. David Ashworth, Captain, USN (Ret) at our squadron for a very special visit.

These two gentlemen have a unique historical connection to VFA-115. Mr. Retelas’ grandfather & Mr. Ashworth’s father both served in Torpedo Squadron 11 during WWII. VFA-115 traces its roots back to Torpedo Squadron 11.

Mr. Ashworth’s father was the first commanding officer of VT-11 and went on to become a Vice Admiral in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Retelas’ grandfather served as an Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class. Both men served in VT-11 at the same time during their combat operations in the Pacific theater.

Mr. Retelas’ grandfather was the creator of a scroll that was signed by all members of VT-11 during their time on Guadalcanal. Next to certain names on the scroll are stars delineating which members of VT-11 were killed in action. Mr. Retelas’ grandfather went on to donate the scroll to the Hornet Museum when it opened in 1998.

Mr. Retelas, a volunteer at the USS Hornet museum in the Bay Area, located the scroll several years later recognizing it from his childhood when it was displayed in his grandfather’s home.

Mr. Retelas and the Hornet museum graciously gifted VFA-115 the scroll for us to display it in our ready room. Sailors from the squadron had the opportunity to hear from both gentlemen about the history of the scroll and view journals, photos, and timeless memorabilia from Mr. Retelas’ grandfather. This scroll and its delivery to VFA-115 symbolizes the proud traditions and history of Naval Aviation.

For more information on VT-11 and its history, see George’s instagram page where he has linked two of his documentaries covering the squadron and its accomplishments.

One of the best perks of being located in California is our vicinity to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States. From the Sierra Nevadas to Big Sur, Eagle Aviators regularly transit these landscapes when en route to our training ranges.

Pictured here is one of our own flying over the snowy Sierra Nevadas en route to a training sortie over Death Valley.

Several exciting updates to share from the last few months:

The Eagles of VFA-115 officially completed our transition from the FA-18E Super Hornet to the F-35C Lightning II and earned our Safe for Flight qualification!

Pilots & Sailors from the squadron continue to travel TAD and gain experience from across the fleet to bring back to the Eagles.

Pilots had the opportunity to travel to Iwakuni, Japan and fly with our fellow 5th Gen teammates from the VFA-97 “Warhawks” & VFA-125 “Rough Raiders” as we were graciously hosted by the VFA-147 “Argonauts”.

CDR William “Milkman” Gifford turned over command to CDR Nicholas “Thunder Buddy” Lowe in an airborne change of command.

The squadron continues to grow as we acquire additional Jets and personnel and get ready to join a Carrier Air Wing later this year!
