With so much food produced in Pennsylvania, there’s no reason anyone in our state should experience hunger. And yet, more than 1.7 million Pennsylvanians do.

The Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System (PASS) was created to establish a mechanism and pathway for surplus agricultural products in PA to be distributed within the charitable food network while fairly compensating farmers for their costs related to harvesting, processing, packaging, and transporting the food.

For the last decade, we’ve been forging partnerships with farmers, processors and distributors to support local farmers and economies, reduce food waste, and provide Pennsylvanians with the fresh, local foods they need to thrive.

Growing together to support our communities! 🌱

Team members from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Cooperative (MARC)—an initiative of Feeding Pennsylvania—recently joined America's Grow-a-Row and NJ regional food banks to plant fields and plan for the upcoming harvest.

Through this incredible partnership, the farm's retention of fresh, New Jersey-grown produce for local families nearly doubled, rising from 34% in 2024 to 64% in 2025!

Together, we are ensuring fresh, nutritious food reaches neighbors across all 21 New Jersey counties. Thank you to our food bank members and New Jersey Assistant Secretary of Agriculture Joe Atchison for your vital support! 🥬🌽

A healthy, well-balanced diet is one of the most effective ways to prevent and manage heart disease and high blood pressure. At many food pantries, neighbors can access fresh fruits, vegetables, and proteins, alongside nutrition demonstrations and educational materials to help them succeed.

Since accessing better quality food at her local pantry, Josephine's life has transformed. "Now I’m able to get up out of bed myself. I’m able to bathe myself, dress myself, cook a meal for myself. I didn’t have the energy before this to do any of that. I can take walks now,” she added. “I’m able to do that on my own.”

Josephine is proof that nutritious food is life-changing. Learn more about heart-healthy eating at heart.org/en/healthy-living/healthy-eating ❤️🥬

Yesterday, we celebrated a decade of the PA Agricultural System (PASS), a crucial program that supports PA farmers, provides nutritious food to our neighbors, and helps reduce food waste 🚜

PASS connects PA’s farmers with regional food banks by covering harvest and transport costs for surplus food. In the past 10 years, PASS has rescued 38.3 million pounds of fresh surplus food, reinvested $31.9 million into PA's agricultural economy, and provided more than 31.7 million meals to over 7.9 million households.

We had the honor of joining farmer Ed Weaver, a PASS farmer for 10 years, and his family at Weaver's Orchard in Morgantown for the event where chefs from Helping Harvest served a meal crafted from ingredients produced by PASS farms and Weaver's Orchard themselves. Secretary Russell Redding and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Senator Judy Schwank, and other advocates of the program came together to emphasize how vital continued state backing is to our farmers, agricultural economy, and charitable food system.

Thank you to our incredible network of farmers, food banks, and supportive partners who make this possible. Let’s keep growing a well-nourished Pennsylvania!
