We’re still looking for new Feed It Onward partners!

Recently, Regional Administrator Jim Macy visited Urbavore Urban Farm in Kansas City, Missouri. Urbavore fertilizes their fields with compost from their sister company, Compost Collective KC, which provides curbside composting services to the community.

Thank you Urbavore Urban Farm for hosting us – we look forward to continuing our partnership as we welcome you into the Feed It Onward initiative!

Last week, EPA announced over $240 million in funding to protect water quality in the Heartland.

First, we rolled out over $40 million in new Emerging Contaminants in Small or Disadvantaged Communities (EC-SDC) grant funding to address PFAS and emerging contaminants in Region 7 communities that need it most.

Then, we announced over $198 million in funding for our four states’ Drinking Water State Revolving Funds to help them find and replace lead pipes.

Both initiatives underscore EPA’s commitment to Making America Healthy Again by ensuring clean water for all.

You can read more about funding in each state’s press release listed here: https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/search?f%5B0%5D=press_office%3A226173.

Earlier this month, EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Macy and staff visited the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Central Region headquarters in Lincoln, Nebraska, to discuss touchpoints and explore opportunities for collaboration.

A highlight of the meeting was an excellent tour of the National Cooperative Soil Survey’s Charles E. Kellogg Soil Survey Laboratory (KSSL), which served as a testament to the significance and quality of KSSL data for soil resource assessment and management.

Alright, this is pretty cool. The Winnebago Environmental Protection Department just launched a PM2.5 air-monitoring system on Tribal lands, thanks to EPA funding and some innovative thinking. The monitor checks the Air Quality Index hourly and lights up with colors inside a globe to show real-time air quality.

This provides individuals with immediate information about pollutant levels and allows the community to respond as necessary to hazardous conditions.

The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska has achieved a major milestone in self-governance over the protection of its waters with EPA’s approval of the Tribe’s Treatment as a State (TAS) supplemental application to administer the Water Quality Standards and section 401 certification programs. The EPA’s approval adds 1,600 acres along the Missouri River to the Tribe’s existing TAS. These lands were included as part of the Tribe’s Reservation as a result of the Winnebago Land Transfer Act of 2023.

During a Winnebago Tribal Council meeting last week, EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Macy signed the approval that recognizes the Tribe’s continued authority to manage and protect water resources on these additional Tribal lands under federal environmental laws, supporting self-governance and future program development.

This marks an important step forward in recognition of the Tribe’s authority to protect rivers and streams on Tribal lands.
