📣🏠Sharing Knowledge and good news about the Foster Youth to Independence voucher program!

This week Housing Services Director Heather McNeive and our partners from Department for Children and Families (DCF) Independent Living were proud to present to the Kansas Housing Conference about the Foster Youth to Independence (FYI) housing voucher program.

FYI provides critical housing assistance and support to young adults with a history of foster care, helping create pathways to housing stability, independence, and opportunity.

Recent updates to the program have made more opportunities possible for young adults in our community to receive support.

Thank you to our DCF partners and the Kansas Housing Conference for bringing housing and child welfare professionals together to strengthen this important work across Kansas! 🤝

🏘️It is Housing & Community Development Programs Week, and in Johnson County, Housing Services uses Federal funds to help families, seniors, and people with disabilities remain safely housed.

This Federal funding is crucial to the HOME and Minor Home Repair programs facilitated by Housing Services. Last year we completed 18 HOME and 29 Minor Home Repair projects. We want to highlight some before and after repair projects. 🏚️🏠

These programs have helped preserve affordable homes and connect residents to safety and stability. Both these programs have a growing waitlist, and continued funding is essential to maintaining safe and stable homes. 🤝🛠️Housing Services attended the Johnson County Vendor Outreach Event this week. Our goal was to recruit contractors to participate in the housing services repair programs. We connected with several potential contractors.

We serve low-income Johnson County residents with home repairs by addressing, safety, sanitation, and the preservation of the local housing stock. We are committed to developing and maintaining a robust list of contractors. We are actively seeking contractors to participate in the Programs.

If you know a contractor who might be interested in participating, please share.

🎉 Celebrating 17 years of public service!

The Advisory Committee plays an important role in advising the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners on housing and community development policies and the investment of federal HUD resources, including Community Development Block Grants, HOME and Housing Authority programs.

Charles’s commitment, leadership and thoughtful guidance have helped ensure these resources are invested responsibly to strengthen our community and improve the lives of our residents.

Heather Bradley-Geary, Chair, presented Charles with his Recognition of Service.

A cute reminder and good house keeping tip!🏠🐱🍳

🥺🐱

1️⃣Scrape grease solids directly into a lined trash can.
2️⃣Pour cooled grease into a sealable container.
3️⃣Wipe remaining grease and debris with a paper towel.

Home garbage disposals do not keep grease out of the sewer system. Hot water and other products such as soap that claim to dissolve grease only pass it down the line causing blockages and overflows. 🙅‍♀️

It is Preserve and Protect Vouchers Week.

Question: What is a voucher?

Answer: The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program is a federally funded program designed to provide subsidies to very low and extremely low-income families, allowing them to locate decent, safe housing while maintaining rental payments at an affordable level.

🪠🚽Helpful plumbing tips! Do not flush the wipes! Toss them in the trash!🗑️

🔵🟰🟢

Don’t let the label fool you; 🚽 "flushable" wipes are anything but.
Unlike toilet paper, they don't dissolve, which means they’re a leading cause of nasty clogs and sewer backups. 🤢

Do your pipes (and the environment) a favor—toss them in the trash. 🗑️

We would like to shine a light on Kiva L. Johnson Hatcher a recent Family Self-Sufficiency Graduate! When Kiva joined FSS in 2023 she was struggling through unemployment, housing stability, and personal life challenges. With the support of individual case management and employability guidance, Kiva has secured and maintained full-time employment and no longer receives a housing choice voucher! Kiva is thriving and is fully self-sufficient! Congratulations Kiva! If you want to learn more about this program visit the link in the comments below. 👇
