Training Today for a Safer Tomorrow

Today, Kings Creek Fire Department firefighters traveled to Grace Chapel Volunteer Fire Department to complete required Facilities Training.

To maintain the highest standards of safety, each firefighter must complete 18 hours of facilities training annually at a site featuring at least 3 stories and 2 acres of property. Today’s rigorous session included:

Hose Advancements

Search and Rescue

Ladder Operations

Forcible Entry

VEIS (Vent-Enter-Isolate-Search)

These specialized skills ensure we continue to provide the best possible service to the citizens of the Kings Creek Community.

A huge thank you to Grace Chapel Volunteer Fire Department for hosting us and providing expert instruction!

KCFD mourns the loss of Chief Owens. Chief Owens was a staple in the region and trained many of us throughout the years and was also our friend. Please keep his family, friends and the Gamewell Fire Dept in your prayers.

We deeply mourn the loss of former Fire Chief Keith Owens, a leader whose bravery and dedication inspired generations of firefighters and citizens. Chief Owens’ extraordinary commitment spanned over five decades, including 55 years of service with the Gamewell Fire Department, where he served as Chief for 31 years (1990–2021).
His passion for the fire service extended throughout North Carolina, with 20 years at the Lenoir Fire Department and 13 years with the NC Forest Service. Beyond his operational leadership, Chief Owens was a devoted educator. In 2018, his vision for youth mentorship became a reality with the founding of a junior firefighter academy, which was renamed the Chief Keith Owens Junior Fire Academy in 2023. His legacy will live on through the cadets who continue to learn the values of emergency services in his honor.
Funeral arrangements are currently pending and will be announced as soon as they are finalized.

Huge Congratulations to Firefighter Amber Outlaw!

The Kings Creek Fire Department is proud to announce Amber’s graduation from the 2026 Firefighter Recruit School at WPCC Regional Fire & Rescue Training.

Since January 5th, Amber has dedicated over 360 hours to intensive classroom lectures, hands-on drills, and live burn exercises. Completing this rigorous program required significant sacrifice away from her family and her full-time career.

We are incredibly appreciative of her hard work and dedication to earning her NC Firefighter Certification. Please join us in congratulating Firefighter Outlaw on this major milestone!

Yesterday evening KCFD members participated in a training exercise to practice Vent Enter Isolate Search (VEIS). VEIS is a technique used by firefighters to search a specific room of a structure where a victim is believed to be located by making entry through that rooms window. Steps in VEIS are to Vent (break out the window), Enter through the window, Isolate (go directly to the rooms entry door, search for victim immediately outside of the entry door then shut it, isolating the hazards outside of the room), then search the room for the victim. If a victim is found the victim is moved to the entry window and removed from the structure through that window. This is a single firefighter search and rescue with a second firefighter staying at the window to guide the entry firefighter by use of thermal imaging camera. The firefighter at the window will assist the entry firefighter with removing the victim back up and out of the window.

In addition our members were able to use our new rescue manikin for the first time. The manikin seen in the photos is 176 lbs.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

🔥 Heater Safety Message – Kings Creek Fire Department 🔥

With an ice storm expected this weekend, the Kings Creek Fire Department reminds residents to use extreme caution if using propane or kerosene heaters for warmth—especially during potential power outages.

• Only use heaters approved for indoor use and follow all manufacturer instructions.
• Never use outdoor heaters, grills, or generators inside homes, garages, or enclosed spaces.
• Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn, including furniture, bedding, and curtains.
• Never refuel a heater while it is running or still hot.
• Ensure proper ventilation at all times to prevent dangerous carbon monoxide buildup.
• Do not leave heaters unattended and always turn them off before going to bed.
• Make sure your home has working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms on every level.

Ice storms often lead to extended power outages, and improper heating practices can quickly turn deadly. A few simple precautions can prevent fires, injuries, and loss of life.

Stay prepared. Stay warm. Stay safe.

Kings Creek Volunteer Fire Department is proud to announce that our new Brush 1 is officially in service.

This 2026 F-350 is built to handle a little bit of everything. It carries a skid unit (pump and tank) for firefighting, but it's also stocked with rescue tools and medical supplies. Having this vehicle ready to go means our staff can respond to medical calls while still having the right equipment on hand to start working on almost any other type of emergency that comes in at the same time.

We were able to fully fund this $160,000 project through two separate grants, meaning no money was taken from our yearly operating budget.

We want to specifically thank Speaker of the House Destin Hall for his assistance in helping us secure this funding. This truck is a great investment in the safety of our citizens and should be serving the area for a long time to come.
