This week our department trained on our Hurst battery operated equipment. We use this equipment on wrecks to extricate patients from vehicles. As you can see we played Jenga. This helps us focus on how operating this equipment with small movements and steady hands can make larger moves. It may look easy but this equipment weighs a little more than 50 lbs and is awkward when you have to maneuver it. This training forces our firefighters to consider how cutting a car or spreading a door open affects the patient on the other side. So precision is key!

We also played around with our rescue air bags, which is a tedious process! Air bags are used to help lift heavy objects, such as vehicles, machinery, or even a collapsed wall, off of patients to extract them. This process includes a lot of patience and skill.

These past few weeks, our firefighters at Lenoir Fire Department have learned new skills and revitalized existing ones, at Hudson Fire Department's training grounds. Their fire-resistant building has been used to simulate search and rescue operations, aerial to ground ladder manipulation, as well as other skills needed when dispatched to a structure fire.

Over the past few months, the City of Lenoir Fire Department hosted a Technical Rescuer Rope Class where a few of our firefighters obtained their TR Rope Rescue certification. During this class, our firefighters learned all about anchor systems, mechanical advantages, patient packaging, as well as other necessary skills for a rope rescuer to have.

From rigging highline systems in Broyhill Walking Park to utilizing a tripod in a confined space, our firefighters have learned a lot. As a department, we're excited to see how they apply these new found abilities both in and outside the firehouse.

A special thanks to Assistant Chief Chris Jacobs for teaching the class as well as our neighbor Hudson Fire Department for use of their facilities.

Celebrate Safely This Fourth of July!

As you gather with family and friends to celebrate Independence Day, the City of Lenoir Fire Department encourages everyone to make safety part of your celebration.

It’s going to be a HOT one!
• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
• Take breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.

Fireworks Safety

As a reminder: consumer fireworks that explode, spin, launch into the air, or leave the ground are illegal in the state of North Carolina. Also, even legal novelty items such as sparklers can cause serious burns and start fires.

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a professional public display rather than using them at home.

However, if you choose to use legal novelty fireworks after reading this then please;
• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby.
• Use them only outdoors on a flat, paved surface away from homes, vehicles, and dry grass.
• Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
• Never relight a firework that fails to ignite.

Let’s all do our part to keep this 4th fun, and memorable for the right reasons.

On Saturday June 6, 2026 Lenoir Fire will begin its Smoke Alarm Canvassing Event throughout areas in the City of Lenoir. This program, sponsored by the NC Office of the State Fire Marshal provides Lenoir Fire with a number of Smoke Alarms to be installed in homes that need them. Areas being canvassed are derived from Fire Response Data collected from June 2025 to June 2026.

During National Police Week, Lenoir Fire proudly honors our brave brothers and sisters in law enforcement who faithfully serve and protect our communities every day.

There’s always a little banter back and forth between our two departments (all in good fun) but we are more than grateful for the dedication, sacrifice, and courage shown by our peace officers, especially our own City of Lenoir Police Department. Thank you for your commitment to keeping others safe, often at great personal risk.

Please join us in recognizing and thanking all law enforcement officers this week as well as remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

***STATEMENT FROM THE CITY OF LENOIR FIRE MARSHALS OFFICE***

As of this morning, Monday, May 4, 2026, the burn ban has been lifted in the City of Lenoir. Please keep in mind that you are responsible for your fire and any damages associated with it. Please use caution anytime you burn. Many fires are legal when a ban is not in effect (Grilling out, portable outdoor fireplaces, recreational fires – max size 2’x3’). Other fires require a permit either through NCFS, City of Lenoir Fire Marshal’s Office or NC DEQ (burning brush, Bonfires, land clearing or other open burning). Lastly, some fires are illegal at all times and you will receive a citation (burning trash, building materials or any non-natural vegetation). When in doubt call our office and check 828-757-2193.

Today we take a moment to say “thank you”. Thank you to the men and women that come in every third day for their 24 hour shift and serve the citizens of Lenoir.

Today is also a day we honor firefighters not only in our home towns but across the world. We honor those that have gone before us and laid the foundation for what we have today. We honor those that have made the ultimate sacrifice, simply out of care and love for their fellow man.

Men and women in this profession spend countless hours away from their families whether at work, training, or whatever else the job requires from them.

For that we say Happy International Firefighter’s Day to all our Brothers and Sisters!

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Chief Owens. His extraordinary commitment spanned over five decades, including 55 years of service with the Gamewell Fire Department, where he served as Chief for 31 years (1990–2021). He also served 20 years with the Lenoir Fire Department and 13 years with the NC Forest Service.

His funeral service will be today (Thursday, April 30) at 2 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church. A livestream will be available at www.mzbcnc.org and on the church's page.
