Gateway Woods

Gateway Woods Located in northeast Indiana, Gateway Woods is a nonprofit offering Christ-centered social services.

Founded in 1976 on a 50-acre campus near Fort Wayne, IN, Gateway Woods offers seven programs: Adoption, Foster Care, GW Farms, LARC, Residential, On-Grounds School, and Professional Foster Care. While each program is unique in its services and the people it reaches, each one shares the same values and principles by providing Christ-centered family and social services.

We would like to welcome Mimi Hicks as our new LARC coordinator. We are so thankful for her following the Lord's calling that led her here!

A co-worker who had friends serving as house parents encouraged me to explore the possibility of a part-time role in the teen moms’ house. She had heard my testimony, knew I had been a teen mom myself, and thought the opportunity might be a meaningful fit. I loved my job at Blackhawk Christian School. I was happy there, wasn’t looking to leave, and was only seeking part-time work. After hearing about all the amazing things God was doing through GWFS, I requested an application. I interviewed, and the rest is history!

A few fun facts about Mimi:
- One of the greatest gifts God has given me is my big mouth—I can be very loud! I’m not the cheer coach by accident.
- My siblings all know and acknowledge that I’m the favorite child—after all, I’m the oldest of three.
- No one ever believes I’m as old as I am.

God continues to bless our ministry with laborers for the field! Gwen Hyde has accepted a position as an Adoption Case Manager. We couldn't be more thankful.

A little bit about Gwen:
I’ve been a homeschool mom and remote bookkeeper for years, but found myself with more availability as my kids have begun transitioning to college. As an adoptive mom myself, I am honored to now be on this side of the process and offer stability and hope to those looking to join the adoptive community as well. It’s not a path I had ever guessed for myself, but God has a fun way of aligning every bit of our journeys!

3 Fun facts about Gwen:
- I really love plants, but can’t keep them alive.
- I moved around a lot as a kid and throughout college, so even though I’ve lived in Fort Wayne for ten years now, I find myself itching to at least move around a room from time to time.
- I think spreadsheets are fun.

Today, as we are getting into the full swing of preparing for our Annual Gateway Woods Benefit Auction and looking forward to our 50th Reunion and Community Fall Celebration. We're using National Ball Point Pen Day to remember how, for the past 50 years, God has written the mission, purpose, and ministry of Gateway Woods on many people's hearts. From staff, residents, and clients to donors, representatives, and supporters, God has been the author of this 50-year story, and we prayerfully look forward to 50 more!

We are thankful and blessed that Spencer Leman has agreed to serve as our Summer Volunteer Coordinator this summer at Gateway Woods. This is a very important position, and we know Spencer will do it exceptionally well!

A little about Spencer and what brought him here:

Spencer first applied to Gateway as an intern in spring 2025. When that door closed, he still felt called to Gateway, so instead, he decided to volunteer for the entire summer. By the end of the summer, his name was already being thrown around as a possible VC for the next summer. Through much prayer and deliberation, he decided that he again felt at peace returning to Gateway. He has since been blessed to be selected as the Summer Volunteer Coordinator, and could not be more excited to serve once again in this amazing ministry filled with God's people.

Fun facts:
- He attends the best school in Indiana, Purdue, for engineering.
- He has his private pilot's license.
- He has been skydiving.

We are excited to welcome Emma Laukuf as the Education Intern this summer. We are so glad that she chose to share her skills with us this summer and to follow God's leading in her life!

What brought her to Gateway:
I never really understood the mission behind Gateway Woods or how it worked, despite having grown up in the Leo church. After my brother and sister-in-law started working as houseparents last summer, I decided to volunteer and try to learn more about Gateway. God quickly grew my compassion for the ministry throughout this past year. I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember, and I’m thankful to gain experience this summer. I’m excited to combine my passion for teaching with my growing compassion for Gateway Woods' mission!

Fun facts about Emma:
She's read/listened to 35 Agatha Christie novels and counting.
She worked at a coffee shop for almost two years before starting this internship.
Her favorite hobbies include going to coffee shops, attending concerts, and traveling.
