We sponsor fundraising events throughout the year in support of the Garvey Senior Activity Center in Leonardtown, Maryland. The Garvey Senior Activity Center Council, Inc., evolved from a grassroots movement called the Garvey Group in July 2014. Mary's County Commissioners with an outpouring of community support, to move the planning for a Garvey Senior Activity Center up two years in their budge
t planning. It was 50 years old and too small to accommodate the members. Having achieved that goal in May 2015, the Garvey Group expanded their efforts in support of the current and planned new Garvey Senior Activity Center. The Garvey Group began fundraising efforts in July 2015 in support of the programs and activities offered by the Garvey Senior Activity Center . In September 2015 the Garvey Group became incorporated as the Garvey Senior Activity Center Council, Inc., and approved by the IRS as a non-profit organization 501(c)3 in December 2015. Our purpose is to promote the general interest, healthy mind, body and spirit, welfare and social interactions among seniors (50 and older) of St. Mary's County, Maryland. The Garvey Council will raise funds to support the programs and activities of he Garvey Senior Activity Center located in Leonardtown, Maryland. The Garvey Council consists of 12 voting members and unlimited associate members. The Garvey Council meets the first Wednesday of every month from 1-3:00pm at the Garvey Senior Activity Center. We volunteer our talents wherever we are needed in support of the Garvey Senior Activity Center. Many volunteers lead classes in arts and crafts, teach basic computer skills, line dancing, photography skills, kitchen support (must be kitchen certified-training provided), receptionist support, administrative or clerical support, holiday decorating, master gardening skills, fundraising and grant writing.
