Leonia is facing substantial challenges around development and the pressure of urbanization which can materially affect our quality of life. Borough finances will come under increasing stress given mandated state cost increases for insurance benefits and pension funds. Now more than ever, we must have capable, proven, and consistent leadership which will continue to position Leonia for success, help preserve our residential character and help us get every penny of value from each tax dollar.

“I am humbled by Leonians’ confidence in me to serve as your Mayor. It is an honor and opportunity I take very seriously. Regardless of whether you’re a Democrat, a Republican or an Independent – I will work for all of you and listen to all. Working cooperatively with the rest of the governing body, I will always do what I believe is best for Leonia. You can count on it.

As Chief Executive Officer of the Borough, I am also the Chief Communications Officer. Leonians must stay well-informed about events and key issues. Let’s minimize surprises by enhancing communication channels. We plan to update and revamp the website, utilize Nixle messages, share YouTube videos on key topics, leverage the listserv, make use of the new digital sign in front of the library and host more Town Halls. My commitment is to disseminate information in a way that suits the public, recognizing that some methods may be more effective than others. By providing more information about what’s going on we can invite more informed participation.”

Additional items that I addressed include:
• Emphasis on the importance of volunteers in the community.
• Recognition of the challenges and the need for collective effort.
• Focus on responsible development and zoning regulations to maintain Leonia's unique character.
• Formation of a Mayor's Advisory Board for redevelopment.
• Encouragement for citizens to get involved in boards and committees.
• Upcoming challenges related to the 2024 budget and financial considerations.
• Confidence in the Finance Committee and CFO to handle budgetary matters.
• Personal commitment to serving Leonia and making it a better place.

On January 3, I was officially sworn in as Leonia’s Mayor. There is plenty of work for us to accomplish and communicating what is happening is part of my commitment to you.

Let’s start with a quick debrief of the Wednesday January 3rd reorganization meeting outcomes.

After thanking outgoing Mayor Judah Zeigler and Councilmembers Maureen Davis and Pat Fusco for their service, we swore in Councilmembers Diane Scarengella and Jordan Zeigler. I know Diane and Jordan share my commitment to excellence in municipal services and want what is best for Leonia. I look forward to working with them and urge you to not hesitate to contact any members of the governing body with any concerns or questions you may have.

Here is an overview of more from the meeting:

➤Welcomed Marisa Mesropian as our new Borough Administrator.
➤Formed a Redevelopment Advisory Board to bridge gaps in the redevelopment plan.
➤Announced Committee Assignments for Council members.
➤Swore in our Fire Chief, John Dunn and all of the fire officers.
➤Highlighted Finance Committee's work on the 2024 budget.
➤Thanked Leonia's volunteers for their contributions.
➤Encouraged volunteering opportunities.
➤Emphasized unity among Leonians.
➤Updates will be official through the borough website.

Statement of Values and Solidarity with Israel:

Love and compassion are shared beliefs across all major religions whether Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism etc. I also know the actions of violent extremists do not represent the religions in whose name they operate. These people are extremist outliers with no moral compass and no regrets.

The savage violence inflicted recently by Hamas on Israeli men, women and children should never be accepted or excused.

I believe this is a critical time to stand by Israel and for each of us to support governmental and private efforts to provide whatever help Israel needs to defend itself and recover. I believe in Israel. I believe in justice, and I believe in making sure this never happens again.

As our only democratic ally in the Middle East, Israel has long stood alone. I was very proud of President Biden’s statement following these terrorist massacres of full support for Israel and believe that is exactly what we need to do as a people and a country –from every local town like Leonia through our county, state and federal governments. 100% support for Israel, its democracy and its people in the face of those who fail to even recognize Israel’s right to exist.

Just as unparalleled diplomatic progress was being made between Saudi Arabia and Israel, Hamas unleashed this brazen and irrefutably violent attack. The timing is not a coincidence. Nor was the strategic nature of targeting innocent civilians. It was meant to delay peace. And it most likely will. That too is unacceptable. All eyes are on Israel now. I am hopeful Israel will make every effort to protect the basic human rights of innocent people living in Gaza and to do everything they can to recover all the hostages held there.

Here in Leonia, we should rally around the Jewish community as they mourn the losses in Israel and help spearhead efforts of assistance as appropriate. I’m sure we will be hearing more in the coming days about how each of us might be able to help. I will do my part, and each of you I’m confident will do the same.

In these days of polarization and distrust, we can all take some comfort in the fact that most people do not condone the actions of a few extremists and inherently good people are in the majority locally and globally. I truly believe this, and it keeps me going. What actions we take now in support of Israel during this great time of need will help further define who we are and the values we hold dear as Leonians. I know Leonians will be there as I am.

Sincerely,
William (Bill) Ziegler
