HACKENSACK WOMAN CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED ASSAULT

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of 52-year-old ROHWENIVEN BACANI of Hackensack, NJ, on the charge of aggravated assault. The arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Chief Jeff Angermeyer, and the Leonia Police Department, under the direction of Chief Scott Tamagny.

On Friday, September 11, 2026, the Leonia Police Department received information regarding a resident who was already hospitalized and being treated following a serious medical episode that may have been the result of a poisoning. The Leonia Police Department notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, as well as the Robbery-Homicide Division, and a joint investigation was initiated. Detectives learned that the victim, who was hospitalized for several days and now recovering, believed she had been poisoned by an acquaintance, later identified as ROHWENIVEN BACANI.

A weeks-long, joint investigation revealed that the victim had agreed to meet ROHWENIVEN BACANI at a restaurant in Fort Lee, NJ, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The meeting was arranged so that the victim and BACANI could discuss unauthorized banking activity that the victim detected within her financial accounts, to which BACANI had shared access.

Detectives determined that when the victim arrived at the restaurant, ROHWENIVEN BACANI was already present and had a cup of tea waiting for the victim. The victim drank some of the beverage but did not finish it after detecting an unusual taste. Subsequently, the victim collapsed while leaving the restaurant and woke up in the hospital with no knowledge of how she arrived. Ultimately, the investigation revealed that BACANI had poisoned the victim with a controlled dangerous substance, namely a benzodiazepine, added to the tea.

As a result of the investigation, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, ROHWENIVEN BACANI was charged with third-degree aggravated assault, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(7). The following day, Thursday, October 15, 2026, detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Leonia Police Department located BACANI outside of her residence in Hackensack, NJ, and placed her under arrest. BACANI was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.

Prosecutor Musella states that the charge is merely an accusation, and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. He would like to thank the Leonia Police Department for its partnership and assistance throughout this investigation. Moreover, Prosecutor Musella thanks the Fort Lee Police Department and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office for their assistance with this investigation.

LEONIA POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES PROJECT BLUE ANGEL

The Leonia Police Department is proud to announce the launch of Project Blue Angel, a free community safety program made possible through a grant from the New Jersey Department of Human Services.

Project Blue Angel is designed to assist residents age 55 and older, as well as individuals with medical conditions or disabilities, who may live alone or have difficulty answering their doors during an emergency.

Through this program, eligible residents can have a secure lockbox installed outside their home, allowing police, fire, and emergency medical personnel to quickly access the residence when someone inside is unable to open the door.

The Leonia Police Department, in partnership with the Borough of Leonia and the Leonia Senior Center, will promote this valuable program and provide informational presentations to the community.

JOIN US FOR AN INFORMATION SESSION / COFFEE WITH A COP

We invite residents to join us at the Leonia Senior Center, 305 Beechwood Place, on Tuesday, October 13, at 12:00 PM. for Coffee with a Cop. Members of the Leonia Police Department will be on hand to explain how Project Blue Angel works, answer questions, and assist anyone interested in registering for the program.

Our goal is simple: to provide peace of mind to residents and their families while helping first responders provide assistance when every second counts.

Residents interested in participating are encouraged to review the attached flyer for additional information and registration instructions.

We look forward to seeing you on October 13!

We have been tracking the nor'easter that will impact our area this weekend. The current forecast calls for total rainfall of 1.5 to 3 inches with wind gusts of 35-40mph. A wind advisory has been issued until 6AM Sunday. The advisory states: "The strong winds will last for a very long duration, possibly exceeding 24-36 hours. Considering the long duration rainfall and the full foliage of trees, impacts may be exacerbated."

Borough officials have been busy preparing for the storm. The Department of Public Works (DPW) has cleared catch basins in flood prone areas, placed sandbags in strategic locations and prepared the water pump in case of flooding. DPW staff is scheduled for the weekend to respond to any flooding issues or fallen trees. As a reminder, the DPW can be reached after hours and during the weekend by calling the Leonia Police Department at (201) 944-0800.

Members of the DPW and the Police Department participated in a briefing held by PSE&G this afternoon. PSE&G has increased their staffing for the weekend and is prepared for the storm. For wires down or other dangerous conditions, please call 9-1-1 to report the emergency. Power outages should be reported directly to PSE&G via their mobile app, website, texting "Out" to 4PSEG (47734), or calling 800-436-PSEG (7734). Please do not call 9-1-1 or the Leonia Police Department to report a power outage.

Unfortunately, the Rotary Club's Oktoberfest event scheduled for Saturday, September 26th, in Wood Park has been cancelled due to the weather. The Environmental Commission's Halloween Costume Swap will be held Saturday from 9:30am to 12:30pm in the Recreation Center.

As the saying goes, "We are hoping for the best and preparing for the worst." Some steps that you can take to help prepare for the storm:
* Charge cell phones and other essential electronic devices
* Keep flashlights and fresh batteries readily available, avoid using candles if possible
* Secure outdoor furniture, garbage cans and any other loose objects that could become airborne in strong winds
* Never touch or approach downed wires, always assume they are energized and dangerous
* Use portable generators only outdoors and away from doors and windows to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
* Never drive through flooded roads and avoid travel during heavy rain and high winds

Please be safe this weekend and know that the Borough of Leonia is ready to respond if you need us.
