PRESS RELEASE – STRUCTURE FIRE

Today at approximately 8:23 a.m., the Leonidas Township Fire Department, along with automatic aid from the Athens Township Fire Department, was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 53000 block of Shannon Road.

Units responded and arrived to find a two-story residential structure with heavy smoke showing from the home. Crews quickly deployed handlines and initiated an interior fire attack.

Firefighters encountered high heat, zero-visibility conditions, and significant hoarding conditions inside the residence. Despite these challenging conditions, crews worked to bring the fire under control in approximately three hours. Units remained on scene for approximately six hours conducting overhaul and completing other fireground operations.

No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.

Due to significant fire damage and concerns regarding the structural integrity of the residence, the home was ultimately demolished.

The Leonidas Township Fire Department would like to thank Athens Township Fire Department, Colon Fire Department, Mendon Fire Department, Pavilion Township Fire Department, Climax Township Fire Department, Burr Oak Fire Department, Centreville Fire Department, and St. Joseph County Victim Services for their assistance on scene.

Incidents like this demonstrate the importance of strong mutual-aid partnerships and the support provided by agencies throughout our community. We greatly appreciate everyone who responded and assisted during this incident.

Last Sunday, our members, along with our mutual aid partners from Climax and Pavilion Township Fire Departments, conducted a live-fire training burn.

Training opportunities like this are extremely valuable because they allow firefighters to practice and improve their skills in realistic conditions. Throughout the day, crews focused on search operations without a hoseline, hoseline advancement, fire attack, and extinguishment.

We are fortunate to have strong working relationships with our mutual aid partners. Training together helps ensure that when we are called to an emergency, our departments are prepared to work together safely and effectively.

This acquired structure provided numerous training opportunities over the past several months, and we are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to use it. Sunday marked the final day of training and the end of the structure, but the experience gained from it will continue to benefit our members and the communities we serve.

Thank you to Climax and Pavilion Township Fire Departments for training alongside us and continuing to strengthen our mutual aid partnerships.

Most importantly, everything we do in training is ultimately for the people we serve. Opportunities like this allow our firefighters to build the skills, confidence, and teamwork needed when our neighbors are having their worst day. We are proud to serve our community and remain committed to continually improving so that when the call comes, we are prepared to provide the best service possible. The Pavilion Township Fire DepartmentClimax Township Fire Department
