Keep Missouri beautiful — where the rivers run deep, the Ozarks roll on forever, and the only thing that should be making noise… is the music. 🌊🌳🎶
Wildlife thrives, sunsets glow over the Arch, and the heartland does its thing.
Data centers can go anywhere. This? This is Missouri.

Compass plants are often mistaken for sunflowers, but despite both being in the Asteraceae family, they are distinct from each other.

The key differences lie in subtleties like stem and leaf characteristics, as well as where the seeds are produced:

In sunflowers, disc florets on the head of the flower create the seeds

In compass plants, ray florets, sometimes called "petals", turn into the seeds

These differences help highlight the often subtle ways life adapts over time; while both sunflowers and compass plants can be traced back to a common ancestor and can appear very similar in nature, signs of divergent evolution are evident, and can give us clues about the history of life on our planet!

Description: on the left, text that reads, "Nature for all, Nature forever", backdropped by compass plants; on the right, a compass plant being pollinated by a metallic green sweat bee; below, text that reads, "Compass plant is a tall perennial in the same family as sunflowers and daisies. They are easily identified by their deeply lobed leaves!"
