Leverett Fire is on scene on Still Corner Road this morning for a tree down on the power lines. Still Corner Road will be impassible until about 10am.

The Leverett Fire Department's new Engine 2 has been ordered from Bulldog Fire Apparatus. This new truck will be primarily used as a tanker but has the capability to be a fire engine as well. It has a Kenworth chassis, a 3000 gallon water tank, a 1500 gpm water pump and hose crosslays. We hope to receive the truck in August. This will replace the current Engine 2 which is now 27 years old.

Last night, Leverett firefighters attended a training hosted by the Amherst Fire Department on how to use our new Sterling Stealth Personal Rescue Systems. LFD obtained these kits from a State grant a few weeks ago. The kits may be used in a worst-case scenario where a firefighter has to bail out of a window to escape a fire that has trapped them with no other means of escape. Sunday afternoon, Leverett Fire Department was called to respond to four simultaneous medical calls. Leverett's ambulance partner is Amherst Fire Department who dedicated all four of their ambulances to Leverett that afternoon. This is the first time in the history of the Town of Leverett where so many medical responses were occurring at the same time. Yesterday, Leverett firefighters responded to a three-alarm fire in Wendell. Firefighters from all surrounding towns battled flames and extreme heat to extinguish the blaze. Leverett firefighters assisted by dousing the rear of the home with a hoseline and tearing apart an attached barn to hunt for hot spots.

On the way back from this fire, we were called to Montague to assist with evacuating a youth who had fallen 1/2 mile into the woods and couldn't walk on their own. We also conducted our regular weekly drill that evening.

In the first two days of July, Leverett firefighters have responded to seven emergencies. For reference, Leverett Fire is usually called upon once every 1.5 days.

The Leverett Fire Department responded to six incidents yesterday including a car crash, two medical calls, two fallen trees, and one tree on wires. Yesterday was also our drill night where all members recertified in CPR. It was a busy day.

Last night at about 9:30pm, Leverett firefighters were dispatched to a car versus utility pole at the western end of North Leverett Road in Leverett. A pickup truck had run off the road and struck a utility pole. This temporarily shut off power to about ten homes. The driver received minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. North Leverett Road was shut down for about 45 minutes. Thanks to Amherst Fire, Shutesbury Police, Mass State Police, Eversource, and Ernie's Towing for assisting.
