MEETING
Bit of theatre history regarding February 17th:
Puritan William Prynne's thousand-page "Histrio-mastix" (published in 1633) was a violent attack upon stage-plays in which the author laid himself open to the charge of assailing persons in high position by pointing out that kings and emperors who had favored the drama (such as Caligula and Nero) had been carried off by violent deaths. Prynne's assertion might easily be interpreted as a threat to King Charles I. Prynne also castigated females appearing on stage. Unfortunately, Charles' wife, Queen Henrietta Maria, had taken part in the rehearsal of a ballet for a court entertainment just as the sheet containing the offensive words was passing through the press. Of course, it was supposed his comments also applied to the queen.
Prynne was tried for sedition and on 17th February 1634 he was sentenced by the Star Chamber to be imprisoned and also to be fined £5,000. He was expelled from Lincoln's Inn, rendered incapable of returning to his profession as an attorney, degraded from his degree in the university of Oxford, and set in the pillory, where he was to lose both his ears.
Nothing so dramatic is expected to occur as a result of the February 17th scheduled Ivy Lane meeting, to be held at the Levittown Public Library at 7:30 p.m. at which time we will be continuing our 2026 Winter Workshops. We will be working on how to do an effective cold reading and to select appropriate monologues for auditioning.
Please feel free to come and bring a monologue that you believe to be appropriate and allows you to shine. For cold readings, we will provide various scripts to allow you to try different characterizations, etc. So that ample time can be allotted to all, please confirm your participation.
Looking forward to doing monologue work with you on the 17th at the Levittown Public Library at 1 Blue Grass Lane, Levittown.
