88th annual Tri-State Fire Convention was held in Grants, NM hosted by Milan Fire Dept this weekend. The team we sent was trained on forcible entry techniques, stress management, and trauma response to mention a few topics.

The team also brought home a 1st place in the 5-man event, 1st place in the coveted 6-man event, 2nd in the non-member (spouses/kids) event and best shirt awards. They narrowly missed bringing home the sweepstakes trophy.

LAVFD responded to multiple fires over the weekend, both lighting strikes and human caused. It is still extremely dry with only portions of the district receiving any moisture from the storms.

Sad news from western Colorado. Our thoughts are with the families and crew members.

The U.S. Wildland Fire Service is devastated to share that three wildland firefighters lost their lives on Saturday, June 27, as part of an interagency response to the Knowles and Gore fires along the Colorado-Utah border. Additionally, two crew members were injured in the line of duty and have been transported to a hospital.

Our immediate focus is on supporting their families, friends, and fellow crewmates during this incredibly difficult time.

The U.S. Wildland Fire Service stands united with the USDA Forest Service in grief and in our unwavering support for the loved ones left behind. Their bravery, dedication, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Additional details will be shared as they are able to be released.

Wednesday morning LAVFD responded to a reported grass fire that quickly spread to a shed and house, Cortez Fire Protection District responded with an engine and brush truck to assist.
A preliminary investigation reports the fire was caused by items being burned in a burn barrel. It is extremely dry this year, please use caution when using a burn barrel and insure it has a proper screen on the top. All open burning is prohibited at this time.

Last night LAVFD hosted a multiagency mass casualty incident (MCI) training scenario. Members of LAVFD along with members from Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department, Classic Air Medical, Southwest Memorial Ambulance and Montezuma County Office of Emergency Management responded to the Yellow Jacket Livestock Auction for a mock explosion with fire and multiple people injured. Scenario based live action training helps members improve their incident management, fire suppression and emergency medical skills while working alongside neighboring agencies.

A huge shout out to Lamp Post Creative Learning Center for supplying actors and their incredible moulage skills to help make the scenario more realistic. It was great working with them.

Thank you to our residents and the leadership of our board on Lewis Arriola Fire Protection District, for keeping our dept financed and operating as one of the premier volunteer agencies in the county.

Busy start to June. Two mutual aide structures fires for Cortez, several odor/smoke investigations, and several medical emergency calls.
We also had one mutual aide brush fire for Dolores last night, 6/6 0117hrs…
Our members were able to make initial attack and assist with remedying a possible disaster. Several residents were evacuated for safe measure but were able to return to their homes with in an hour. Cause of fire is undetermined at this time…

Night time lower temps and higher humidity usually slows fire activity however trees were beginning to torch in the early morning reflecting the reason the county and Forrest Service has instilled fire bans. Please be respectful and cautious with all items that could cause sparks or flames (chains on trailers dragging, cigarette butts etc.). Adhere to local restrictions as they were implemented for all of the communities safety.
