Working together to build stronger communities

SEDA‑COG’s June newsletter highlights the power of partnership, planning, and regional collaboration across our communities.

From the adoption of the 2050 Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) to ongoing work with local governments, this effort reflects years of input and a shared commitment to moving our region forward.

At its core, this work is about more than infrastructure. It’s about:
- Connecting people to jobs, healthcare, and education
- Supporting local businesses
- Strengthening quality of life across our communities

Thank you to our partners and residents who continue to help shape the future of our region.

Community Spotlight: Lock Haven

Lock Haven is gaining recognition as one of Pennsylvania’s most underrated cities and it’s easy to see why. With a historic downtown, strong sense of place, and access to incredible natural assets along the Susquehanna River, it represents the kind of community that drives growth and opportunity across our region.

At SEDA‑COG, we’re proud to work alongside communities like Lock Haven that continue to invest in their future while preserving what makes them unique.

Pennsylvania isn't just Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. The state's underrated cities pack a lot of charm.

What happens when you combine Brownfields redevelopment, strong local partnerships, and a shared vision for the future?

You create real opportunity for growth in rural communities.

(Let's start small: What is a brownfield? A brownfield is a property where redevelopment is complicated by environmental concerns from past use, often former industrial or commercial sites.)

SEDA-COG’s Community Revitalization Director, Betsy Kramer, recently joined John Gross (Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection) and Joe Kraycik (Integral Consulting) for a panel discussion moderated by Jennifer Taylor (BRS, Inc.) on building hope and growth across Pennsylvania.

The projects highlighted during the panel discussion reflect the wide range of Brownfields work happening across our 11-county region. Conversations like these give us the chance to show that Brownfields are about more than cleanup. *They are about strengthening our local communities.*

Thank you to BCONE - Brownfield Coalition of the Northeast for bringing this conversation together and to the many partners helping make this work possible.

There’s just something special about this place.

Scenes like this at Montour Preserve are a reminder of why people love living here: the quiet, the scenery, and the strong sense of community.

At SEDA‑COG, that is what we work to support every day: helping communities grow while holding onto what makes them feel like home.

Sonestown, a rural community in Sullivan County with approximately 200 residents, has secured $777,500 in funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) to address significant issues within its wastewater treatment and collection system.

The project, supported by SEDA-Council of Governments (SEDA-COG) through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, will focus on improving aging infrastructure that has raised serious concerns related to public health, water quality, and environmental protection.

Earlier this month, the SEDA-COG Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and Penn College hosted another successful Chainsaw Safety & Maintenance Training at the Penn College classroom and field site at Montgomery.

Eleven attendees from municipal maintenance crews in the SEDA-COG region received morning classroom instruction on using chainsaws in a safe manner, followed by an afternoon field session in Penn College’s woodlot where trees were safely felled.

A similar event will likely be held in Summer 2027. For questions or to get on an early signup list, contact Don Kiel of the SEDA-COG MPO at [email protected], 814-553-8689.
