The Giles and Marshall County Extension offices will be hosting a Cattle ID Workshop at the Tory Creek Ag Center at 3192 Yell Road, Lewisburg. This class will show demonstrations on Hot Iron Branding and Freeze Branding. The importance of having a form of permanent ID for your cattle will be discussed as well. We will also hear from our local Ag Crime Unit Officer about the importance of identification on livestock and some of the current issues they are seeing that impact local Ag Industries. There is no fee for this workshop, and it will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on September 17th. Also, if you are going to be up for a Master Beef renewal in 2026 or 2027, this class will be counted as credit toward your next certification. The Marshall County Soil and Water Conservation District held a land judging training for the Marshall County FFA chapter at the Middle Tennessee AgResearch and Education center in Lewisburg, Tennessee. NRCS Soil Scientist Jackie Reed, Melissa Oliver, and retired NRCS Soil Scientist Debbie Brasfield educated students on the basics of land judging by showing them how to properly complete a score card, what to look for while in the soil pit, and how to determine slope. We hope to see more Marshall County students involved in land judging in future years! Thank you to Hugh Moorehead for letting us host the event at the research center, Josh King Excavation for digging our soil pits and to the Marshall County Soil and Water Conservation District for providing lunch for the event.

Due to drought conditions earlier this year, the Farm Service Agency has initiated a disaster program for Marshall County.

The Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) provides compensation to eligible livestock producers who have suffered grazing losses for covered livestock and who are also producers of grazed forage crop acreage of native and improved pastureland with permanent vegetative cover or acreage planted specifically for grazing. Grazing losses must occur on land physically located in a county experiencing a qualifying drought during the normal grazing period for the county.
