As wheat harvest winds down, Lewis Clark Terminal in the Port has covered the brimming outdoor piles for later shipment. Other wheat flows out from conveyors into waiting barges to slowly settle lower in the water until they are at capacity. When full, the barges will be towed to coastal ports for export. Steady commerce keeping docks busy year-round, with the river system making it all possible.

The Port of Lewiston recently hosted 15 congressional staffers and other Marine Highway 84 users as part of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers annual legislative "fly-in." The group's day included a boat ride through the Lower Granite Dam lock before ending their day at the Port's Confluence Riverfront. We love sharing everything this amazing river system and our region has to offer!

Our vibrant waterways are alive with more than just the agriculture! Sawdust barges and the spirited American Jazz ship have graced the Port in recent weeks, gracefully navigating the waters as fishermen pursue their grandest catches. We love our rivers!

Lights, camera, action! Last week, the Port of Lewiston turned into a TV set as we filmed segments for the educational series "Now We Know!" airing on CNBC. Our episode is set to air early next year and will include interviews with people including Commission President Joe Anderson, Kristin Meira from American Cruise Lines, and Jessi McLean, who owns G&E Spa Essentials. We can't wait to see it!

Navigation was the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ earliest civil works mission, dating to federal laws in 1824 authorizing and funding the Corps of Engineers to improve safety on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and several ports.

Did you know that 60% of all U.S. wheat exports are shipped on the Columbia Snake River system? The Walla Walla District navigation locks help barges transport commodities such as wheat, fertilizers, wood chips, and fuel throughout the country. Barging on the inland Columbia Snake River System moves, on average, approximately 10 million tons of cargo valued at over $3 billion each year.
