Smart budgeting isnโ€™t just about balancing the books, itโ€™s about finding better ways to serve our community while making every dollar go further.

In this video, City of Lewiston Finance Director/Treasurer Aimee Gordon shares a few of the ways the City is reducing costs, streamlining processes, and finding savings without cutting services.

The proposed/updated FY2027 budget will go before the Lewiston City Council for the third reading tomorrow, Monday, August 24th. We encourage you to review the budget guide, ask questions, and take part in the process.

Think of total property taxes collected as a pie, with each slice helping fund a different local public service. Instead, they are distributed among multiple taxing districts that provide services throughout our community.

The chart below shows how property tax dollars were distributed among the five primary local taxing entities serving Lewiston and Nez Perce County, based on Fiscal Year 2025 levy rates.

One important detail: property tax levies are established before the budget year they support. The 2025 levy rates generated revenue for 2026 services. Thatโ€™s why the chart reflects 2025 tax rates.

And you might be wondering: โ€œArenโ€™t there more (or less) than five entities on my property tax bill?โ€

Yes. Your tax bill can vary depending on where your property is located and which taxing districts provide services in your area. While these five represent the primary local agencies serving most Lewiston residents, additional districts may also appear on individual tax bills.

The bottom line: The City of Lewiston is just one of the taxing districts receiving a portion of your property tax payment. Each district has its own budget, services, and tax levy, so your total property tax payment supports a variety of local services, not just City services.

8th Street is one of Lewistonโ€™s primary transportation corridors, connecting neighborhoods, businesses, and major destinations across our community.

Keeping busy corridors like 8th Street safe and reliable requires thoughtful planning, strategic investment, and taking advantage of available funding opportunities. The proposed FY2027 budget includes $1.77 million to begin the 8th Street Safety Improvements Project, a nearly $2 million project that is approximately 93% funded through a federal grant.

๐Ÿ’งWhen it rains, stormwater has to go somewhere.

Behind the scenes, Lewistonโ€™s stormwater system works to collect and direct rainwater away from streets, homes, businesses, and public spaces, helping reduce flooding and protect our community and river system.

While the proposed FY2027 Budget does not include any major stormwater construction projects, it does include important investments in planning, engineering, and preventative maintenance. Proposed projects include annual pipe replacement, drainage studies, stormwater pond design, and updates to the Cityโ€™s Stormwater Master Plan. These investments help address existing drainage concerns, prepare future capital projects, and strengthen the Cityโ€™s stormwater system for years to come.

By investing in proactive maintenance and thoughtful planning today, Lewiston can reduce future flooding, extend the life of existing infrastructure, and prepare for future needs.
